Potato is the fourth major staple food in the world and is still rapidly gaining importance, especially in the tropics. In May, 1994 the second international potato modelling conference was held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, as a summerschool of the C. T. de Wit Graduate School. The conference was sponsored by DLO, SCRI, SSCR, W AU and the LEB-Fund. Over 80 scientists participated, coming from 16 countries. Of each crop physiological and modelling subject, a leading scientist was requested to write a review of the most recent developments in his or her field. The reviews, with highlights from the authors' own work, are such that the physiological work described is of interest to the modeller and the modelling work to the crop physiologist. Applications of the quantitative approach are also reviewed in the concluding chapters that deal with decision support systems, breeding and agro-ecological zoning. An outstanding point of this book is that both the crop ecology and the modelling of a broad range of biotic and abiotic factors are treated by scientists representing groups which are specialized in the subject. The two related disciplines met during the conference and thus wrote the chapters with each other's interest in mind. The book highlights the limitations for potato growth and development from the viewpoints of both the crop physiologist and the crop-systems analyst.

Research and publications on the potato crop have burgeoned since the first edition of this book was published in 1978. However, the warm reception of the first edition suggested that it had a useful part to play in promoting the scientific basis for understanding and improving the yield and quality of the crop. Since the first edition was out of print and a second reprint would not have taken into account the contributions made by research over the intervening years, it became obvious that a complete revision was necessary. There was, in particular, a need to take account of the rapid extension of interest in the crop into climates and farming systems with which it has not been traditionally associa,ted. Those involved with the crop will be sadly aware that a number of contributors to the first edition are no longer with us. Their contribution to our knowledge of the crop will however be a permanent legacy of their achievement. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the book for their willingness to cooperate in the difficult task of bringing their particular subject up to date. Currently, climate change due to global warming induced mainly by land use changes (i.e., intensified agriculture and deforestation) is one of the biggest problems that humanity must urgently address. Thus, promoting models of sustainable agricultural production that ensure food security, environmental conservation and livelihoods for local populations is needed. In this context, humanity has the great challenge of integrating agriculture, ecosystems, environment, and people in the sustainable development scheme, especially with the focus on food systems that maintain a sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Fortunately, there are currently important advances in knowledge and technologies for the management of agrobiodiversity and agricultural crops of great economic and social relevance (i.e., wheat, corn, potatoes, cassava), which will be essential for future scenarios of environmental change. The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the third most consumed crop that contributes to global food security. The potato continues to be recommended as a key food for human consumption, especially in the face of current population growth, related to problems with food supply, nutrition, and food security, and also climate change challenges globally. Understanding how abiotic (i.e., climate, nutrients) and biotic (i.e., pests and diseases) factors and management (i.e., genetic resources, planting) determine production and crop growth patterns has been an important issue in potato crop research. Researchers on potato crops aim to improve agricultural resources management, breeding and seed potato production, post-harvest practices, storage, supply chain, and food security. There are also significant knowledge and technological advances in sustainable potato production systems that have remarkably improved potato yields. Soil Water Balance (SWB), is a generic and mechanistic crop growth model that has been successfully used to model the water balance of several crops. Its ability to combine crop water modelling and irrigation scheduling approaches allows it to be used as a research tool and an irrigation management tool. Since SWB is a tool that could be used as decision making tool for farmers, its accuracy in simulating crop growth, development and soil water balance should be high. To highlight the importance of improved irrigation management for potato crop by the means of a mechanistic soil water balance model and the importance of the photoperiod factor in potato modelling in sub-tropical region, two potato experiments were carried out in two contrasting seasons, namely, spring and autumn. Growth and development responses of potato under both well irrigated and water stressed conditions for spring and autumn plantings were examined. This study successfully quantified the water use and potato growth responses to water stress. The water use efficiency varied with irrigation treatments and planting time, and autumn experiment had generally higher values than spring. Unstressed treatment gave the highest tuber yields irrespective of planting season and marketable tuber yield was higher in autumn than spring. Water stress imposed at tuber initiation until end of tuber bulking was revealed to be the most detrimental to biomass and tuber production. This suggests that water stress at tuber initiation and bulking stage should be avoided if high tuber yield is the target. Growth analysis data were used to determine crop parameters for SWB calibration and validation. The model simulated reasonably well growth, development and soil water balance in both unstressed and stressed conditions. However, simulations results of total and harvestable dry matter towards the end of the exponential tuber bulking stage (50 - 65 DAP) were deteriorated. As a result, the model did not simulate accurately the final yield. This is an indication that the model fails to simulate the size of the canopy and its duration. The time at which tuber initiation commences appeared not be affected by the planting seasons since variation of the duration between emergence and tuber initiation in different seasons was small. This small variation could be attributed to the fact that the potato growing season in South Africa (Pretoria) in spring 2004 and autumn 2005 experiences minimum and maximum temperatures which are acceptable for the growth of potato. In Pretoria, emergence and tuberisation take place under relatively cool temperatures late in September and also early in April when temperatures are relatively cool. Consequently, potato grown in this period may escape the early autumn and late spring high temperatures. However, autumn planting experiences an abrupt change of day lengths from long days to short days towards tuber initiation. This brusque change of day length may change the crop physiology and affect the subsequent normal course of plant growth. If the day length factor could be integrated into SWB, it appears that the model will better simulate potato growth and development. The poor simulation results of total dry matter and harvestable dry matter early in the growing season suggest that the model should be improved by allowing it to simulate the start of tuber initiation. A linear function of average temperature between a base and an optimal temperature corrected with photoperiod factor was found to be the most appropriate method to estimate thermal time required for tuber initiation. This method suggests that the time of tuber initiation can be estimated from its thermal time within two days.
