Potpourri: Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt Family Lore

Potpourri: Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt Family Lore PDF Author: William C. Arbaugh

ISBN: 1426970498
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
On the cover of Potpourri: Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt Family Lore/ is a photograph taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on February 22, 1932, including author William C. Arbaugh and his grandparents, Clara and William G. Arbaugh, with Nora Leone and Alonzo Harvey Arbaugh. In this volume celebrating the family history of the Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt families, Arbaugh captures times past. Fueled by the surprise discovery of a neatly tied bundle of letters, the family history revealed in them led to the preparation of this family memoir. Arbaughs sisters, Nora Dorothy and Mary Margaret, were soon engrossed along with their brother in letters revealing the heartfelt views of their mother, Clara Engelhardt, and their grandmother. These letters described her interest in William G. Arbaugh, a young college friend she fancied. The letters chronicled the strong bond between Clara and William, eventually leading to their marriage upon completion of their education. These letters and the others they discovered served to deepen their respect for them and furthered their understanding of their idealism and strong faith. Potpourri shares family lore, ranging from Germany and the Caribbean to Indiana and Illinois with a broad reach from life on small-scale family farm prior to common use of electricity to the age of atomic energy.

Book Description
"Made in Mexico" examines the aesthetic, political, and sociopolitical aspects of tourism in southern Mexico, particularly in the state of Oaxaca. Tourists seeking "authenticity" buy crafts and festival tickets and spend even more on travel expenses. What does a craft object or a festival moment need to look like or sound like to please both tradition bearers and tourists in terms of aesthetics? Under what conditions are transactions between these parties psychologically healthy and sustainable? What political factors can interfere with the success of this negotiation, and what happens when the process breaks down? With Subcommandante Marcos and the Zapatistas still operating in neighboring Chiapas and unrest on the rise in Oaxaca itself, these are not merely theoretical problems. Chris Goertzen analyzes the nature and meaning of a single craft object, a woven pillowcase from Chiapas, thus previewing what the book will accomplish in greater depth in Oaxaca. He introduces the book's guiding concepts, especially concerning the types of aesthetic intensification that have replaced fading cultural contexts, and the tragic partnership between ethnic distinctiveness and oppressive politics. He then brings these concepts to bear on crafts in Oaxaca and on Oaxaca's Guelaguetza, the anchor for tourism in the state and a festival with an increasingly contested meaning.

Soviet Potpourri

Soviet Potpourri PDF Author: Laszlo Solymar
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1524681237
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 86

Book Description
This book has been written for those who know already a lot about what happened in the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1991. It is at times controversial, at times humorous, and, I hope, constantly provocative. My aim is for readers to say or at least think, Yes, I can now see things more clearly. The principal events of Soviet history are discussed. The central thesis is that the Soviet Union was far from unique, that its ideology bore nearly exclusively the marks of a religion and most of its functioning was derived from the French Revolution, from Nazi Germany, and from Imperial Russia. There is a lot written about the purges, a prediction made in 1984 about the demise of the Soviet Union and a short play about the unsuccessful coup against Gorbachev. The book ends with a light touchjokes about the Soviet system.

Book Description
The Chronicles of a Footloose Forester were compiled over a number of years, one story at a time. Events, observations, encounters, and episodes were the ingredients in the mix that got filed into his memory banks and extracted years later but only after it was decided to make them into his memoirs. Afghanistan to Zambia: Chronicles of a Footloose Forester (published in 2010) was the first distillation of those memories and was based on an alphabetical recounting of places he had been. In the beginning, there was no intention of putting his chronicles into a book; the alphabetical listing of countries he had visited was, at the time in the early 1960s, only a device to properly respond to inquiries about his travels pursuant to obtaining and updating a yearly security clearance. At one time or another, the FBI, the Army Security Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of State all wanted his biographical information, which included the places and the addresses where he had lived since 1931. Obviously, that meant every place since he was born. Thus, it was easier to compile a logical listing and to keep that list in his records for easier updating. The countries of Afghanistan and Zambia eventually worked their way into the list; thus, his first book, Afghanistan to Zambia: Chronicles of a Footloose Forester, was chosen as the title of his first book of memoirs. The process is ongoing. Since the travel history to other counties swelled to 106 countries and territories of the United States, the A to Z listing was also a way to compartmentalize some of his fond memories of people, places, and events. As a forester who worked in domestic and international locales, the A to Z listing had other applications for a footloose forester who had a lifelong interest in forest trees and tropical fruits. Accordingly, the second book of chronicles had a title that reminded him that the very common red maple tree (Acer rubrum) could be seen daily from Maine to Florida and everywhere in between in the states he had visited (forty-nine of fifty) during his career. A suitable title for the second book thus began to emerge. An A to Z theme led to bookend tree species names that were also a part of his reveries. It was gratifying to settle on a subtropical fruit tree commonly known as the jujube and with the botanical name Zyzyphus jujuba. Two jujube trees are growing and thriving right next to his house in Virginia. Thus, another A to Z listing became the receptacle that included personal anecdotes about a potpourri of things in other countries and in the natural world in general. The eventual name of his second book of memoirs emphasized his forestry interests, except that the stories that he wanted to share did not dwell solely on trees or on peoples, places, animals, or events. Dreams and viewpoints about abstract subjects that he wanted to share were also summoned, sorted out, and organized into volume 1, Essays & Dreams that was published in 2015. And the personal blogs regarding tangible, physical, sometimes-hair-raising, real-time episodes in reality were written into volume 2, Stories & Adventures that was published in early 2016. Of the 340 blogs that still reside in computer archives, there are perhaps a hundred or so that have not yet been selected for inclusion in another book. This book and its title, A to Z Word Potpourri: Chronicles of a Footloose Forester is the final product. The next job is to make another list and decide which stories, essays, dreams, and adventures might become a suitable fifth book of memoirs that does not require chronology, background history, logical train of thought, or other raison d’être.
