The Dnr Trilogy

The Dnr Trilogy PDF Author: Don W. Hill M.D.
Publisher: Archway Publishing
ISBN: 1480867381
Category : Fiction

Pages : 408

Book Description
J. D. Brewster is a bright medical student whose promising career is teetering on the edge of disaster. After the head nurse on the medical/surgical unit dies from complications of injuries sustained in a vicious botched carjacking attempt, Brewster becomes demoralized. Sadly, the one person who tried to protect him from the dangerous pitfalls of the arduous clinical clerkship rotations was now gone. Forced to abandon his scientific research projects through no fault of his own, Brewster finds himself in a no-win situation as the pervasive culture of the Gulf Coast College of Medicine and University Hospital is brutal and unforgiving toward medical students. As a consequence to unrelenting and dehumanizing emotional abuse, Brewster and his colleagues become not only callous and largely indifferent to human suffering, but also cruel and fully capable of dispensing retribution when perceived appropriate. The occult “clinical justice” system hidden within the bowels of the university turned out to be much more than just an unsubstantiated rumor whispered amongst the naïve medical students and members of the medical staff. The system of vigilante law and order has become fully manifest, and it is indeed a frightening entity to behold. Brewster is now evolving into an avenger who willingly participates in what he believes to be righteously sanctioned punishment dispensed to those who violate the laws that constitute the very fabric of social order. In this continuing tale, a young student at the Texas Medical Center in Houston is confronted with the intertwining world of healthcare and the dark and evil forces lurking within the encroaching shadows of moral decay.

Book Description
As Michael Patrick Ryan understood it, the criminal justice system was in place to protect the innocent, prosecute the guilty and preserve peace in the land. But what he got tangled up in, none of the above was accomplished. An innocent’s life was forever ruined, the guilty were free to continue their destruction and peace did not reign. And so his options were clear. If he couldn’t depend on the authorities to do their job he would have to take justice in his own hands . . . and so he did.

Too Good to Be True: The Colossal Book of Urban Legends

Too Good to Be True: The Colossal Book of Urban Legends PDF Author: Jan Harold Brunvand
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393104168
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 485

Book Description
"If you enjoy these too-good-to-be-true tales, Brunvand's new book will give you hours of pleasure."—Chicago Tribune A fabulously entertaining book from the ultimate authority on those almost believable tales that always happen to a "friend of a friend." Alligators in the sewers? A pet in the microwave? A tragic misunderstanding of the function of cruise control? No, it didn't really happen to your friend's sister's neighbor: it's an urban legend. And no matter how savvy you think you are, you are sure to find in this collection of over 200 tales at least one story you would have sworn was true. Jan Harold Brunvand has been collecting and studying this modern folklore for over twenty years. In Too Good to Be True he captures the best stories in their best retellings, along with their latest variations and examples of how the stories have changed as they move from person to person and place to place. To help you find your favorite, Brunvand has arranged the tales thematically. "Bringing Up Baby" is full of episodes of child-rearing gone wrong, including the grisly tale of the drugged out baby-sitter who mistakes the kid for a turkey. "Funny Business" showcases stories of infamous lapses in customer service, such as the story of the shockingly expensive chocolate chip cookie recipe. And "The Criminal Mind" features both brilliant --if they were real --scams, as well as the purported antics of the less mentally gifted. Whether you want to become an expert debunker or just have plenty of laughs, this book will surprise and entertain you. Illustrated throughout. "Informative and entertaining.... Brunvand has collected more than 200 of the most-repeated and best-known examples of modern folk-myth."—Tampa Tribune "[N]ot only an entertaining anthology, but an excellent introduction to the study of folklore itself."—Publishers Weekly "A fun read... . All the classics are here from the killer upstairs to the Kentucky Fried Rat."—New City "Resonant stories that express our hidden anxieties ... make us laugh, [or] arouse our fascinated horror."—San Francisco Chronicle Book Review "Informative and entertaining... . Brunvand has collected more than 200 of the most-repeated and best-known examples of modern folk-myth."—Tampa Tribune "[N]ot only an entertaining anthology, but an excellent introduction to the study of folklore itself."—Publishers Weekly

The New Feminist Movement

The New Feminist Movement PDF Author: Marion Lockwood Carden
Publisher: Russell Sage Foundation
ISBN: 1610441060
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
The feminist movement has become an established force on the American political and social scene. Both the small consciousness-raising group and the large, formal organization command the attention of our legislative bodies, media, and general public. Maren Lockwood Carden's new book is the first to look beyond feminist ideas and rhetoric to give a detailed study of the movement—its structure, membership, and history of the organizations that form a major part of present-day feminism. Fair, objective, and comprehensive, her study is based on participant observation and in-depth interviews with rank and file members and local and national leaders in seven representative cities during 1969-1971. In Dr. Carden's analysis, the movement has two divisions. First, the hundreds of small, informal "Women's Liberation" consciousness-raising and action groups. Second, the large, formally structured "Women's Rights" organizations like the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Women's Equity Action League. For both types of organizations, Dr. Carden covers members' reasons for participation; organizational structure; strategies and actions; and the relationship between ideology and structure, including the attempts by many groups to work as "participatory democracies." She also discusses the development of the movement from the mid-sixties to the present, and evaluates the long-term prospects for achieving the objectives of the various new feminist groups. Anyone interested in organizations, personality and society, and social change will welcome this detailed description and history of a complex and rapidly changing social movement. Highly readable and free of technical jargon, The New Feminist Movement tells us what's been happening to women in the last decade, what they want now, and where they may be headed in the future.
