A portable sensitive alpha-particle detector has been developed for scanning and surveying small amounts of U-metal on various surfaces. Although there are various possible ways of detecting alpha particles, for the sake of simplicity and serviceability, the method using an ionization chamber in connection with a portable electrometer circuit is employed. Units built in this laboratory have proven very satisfactory. The high sensitivity that has been achieved with these instruments approximates counter sensitivities.

Book Description
The instrument which is described in the report, comprises a ratemeter, high voltage supply and scintillation probe. The probe contains a Zns:Ag phosphor laid on a plastic scintillator. By the appropriate selection of amplifier gains and window thicknesses, alpha and beta activity may be measured separately in the presence of one another and in a gamma background. Gamma sensitivity is low but efficiencies have been computed for different energies. Although it is a line powered instrument it can function for eight hours on internal rechargeable batteries for portable use. Salient features of the circuit are described and performance figures given. The setting-up procedure is outlined in an appendix.
