Book Description
The Chautauqua Institution is home to one of the largest little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) populations in New York State. According to many Chautauquans, this population has been declining in the last 10 years. One aspect of this study was to gain information on whether insect availability has changed and could be contributing to a possible decline in the little brown bat population at Chautauqua Institution. A bat colony survey was organized to determine out the locations of colonies for future monitoring of the population. The colony survey response included 34% of the homeowners stating a belief that bats were living in their home. These results are incline with the number of colonies reported in previous studies at Chautauqua Institution. Flying insects were trapped weekly using a Malaise trap in order to gain insight on the insects available to the bats as prey and fecal samples (collected from captured bats) were dissected to allow for identification of insect remains. Data were compared with the past study conducted at Chautauqua during the summers of 1991 & 1992 (Syme 1995) to look for any possible changes. Insect availability suggests agreement between the two studies (order Diptera with highest representation). Diet analysis does not suggest agreement (two most represented orders are different) but may be due to fecal sampling biases. Insect availability and diet analysis from this study were compared and suggest that there is a significant difference (P

Book Description
There are three main conservation concerns for bats which are protection of foraging habitat, protection of prey base, and protection of roosts. The main objective of this project was to examine bat house characteristics that make them suitable as alternative roost sites for little brown bats, Myotis lucifugus, at Chautauqua Institution. This study provides more information to understand roost selection in this bat species, allows for development of well-informed conservation strategies, and results in a recommended design for the "best" bat house for this species.
