Nematode Diseases of Crops and Their Sustainable Management

Nematode Diseases of Crops and Their Sustainable Management PDF Author: Mujeebur Rahman Khan
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0323913229
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en

Book Description
Nematode Diseases of Crops and their Sustainable Management focuses on methods to recognize and identify nematode attackers in agriculturally important crops, offering ecologically sustainable and economically viable strategies and measures for the management of nematode infestations and diseases. The book analyzes nematode pests as major constraints in global crop production and explores the limitations of existing nematode management technologies. It offers comprehensive information through individually focused chapters on major nematode problems in internationally important food, fiber and beverage crops as well as in mushrooms, polyhouse agriculture and forest flora with regard to distribution, and much more.In view of the highly damaging nature of the disease complexes and complexity in their management, independent chapters on nematode-fungus and nematode-bacteria disease complexes and their management are also presented. - Presents in-depth information on the synergistic interaction of nematodes with other plant pathogens and the resulting disease complexes - Focuses on sustainable and economically-viable approaches to nematode disease management - Includes coverage of regulatory concerns and challenges

Plant-Parasitic Nematode Population Dynamics and Alternative Management Options for Tomatoes in Southwestern Ontario

Book Description
Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) can be damaging pests on tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) but their population dynamics in southwestern Ontario are unknown. Additionally, growers are unable to obtain accurate population estimates, and relate estimates to published threshold levels, due to inconsistencies in laboratory extraction methods. Finally, few management options are available to reduce PPN damage. The objectives of this study were to examine the population dynamics of PPN in southwestern Ontario tomato fields, compare nematode extraction methods from soil, identify tolerant tomato cultivars, and begin to establish threshold levels. Pratylenchus spp. nematodes were the most common genus found in the survey, present in 100% of fields sampled. Modified and optimized sugar centrifugal flotation methods extracted all PPN genera equally as well or better than the Baermann pan method. The cultivar tolerance trials showed differences in cultivar root galling induced by Meloidogyne hapla; however, high variance prevented further conclusions from being made.

Integrated Management of Fruit Crops and Forest Nematodes

Integrated Management of Fruit Crops and Forest Nematodes PDF Author: Aurelio Ciancio

Book Description
This series originated during a visit of prof. K. G. Mukerji to the CNR Plant Protection Institute at Bari, Italy, in November 2005. Both editors convened to produce a series of five volumes focusing, in a multi-disciplinary approach, on recent advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection and integrated pest and disease management. This fourth Volume deals with management of nematodes parasitic of tree crops, and includes a section on tropical fruit crops and commodities, as well as a second section on tree crops from more temperate areas. The latter also includes a chapter updating the current knowledge about the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Volume 4 flanks Volume 2 of this IMPD series, which focused on management of vegetable and grain crops nematodes. Nematodes are a very successful, diversified and specialised animal group, present in nature in any ecological niche. Among nematode species, only a reduced number feeds on plants, of which a few species cause severe economic impacts on crop productions. Plant parasitic nematodes represent an important concern for a broad range of agricultural productions and systems, worldwide. This statement explains the attention devoted in last decades to nematodes, and the research and technical efforts invested for their control.

Population Dynamics and Management of Belonolaimus Longicaudatus on Strawberry in Florida

Book Description
Commercial production of strawberry (Fragaria x Ananassa) in Florida is adversely affected by the sting nematode Belonolaimus longicaudatus. This study was conducted to determine (i) the nematode's dynamics and movement in soil, (ii) pathogenicity on vegetables commonly double-cropped after strawberry, (iii) alternatives for methyl bromide (mbr) for strawberry and effectiveness of reduced rates of fumigants when applied under virtually impermeable film (VIF), (iv) the pathogenicity of different isolates of sting nematode on strawberry, and (v) tolerance of commercially grown strawberry cultivars to sting nematode. Sting nematode densities increased on strawberry shortly after their planting in October. Populations increased until January when densities peaked and began to decline thereafter. Sting nematodes could be recovered from soil at all depths sampled from 0 to 79-cm deep throughout the year, although their densities remained low at depths below 26 cm. The potential for this nematode to survive in-bed fumigation with mbr and move up through the soil profile was demonstrated. Sting nematodes were pathogenic to and reproduced on six vegetables. They did not increase on watermelon, and increased more on sweet corn and tomato than on cantaloupe, cucumber, pepper, and squash. Strawberry yields and weed densities in beds fumigated with 1,3-9 dichloropene plus chloropicrin combined with oxyfluorfen herbicide were equivalent to mbr treated beds. Reducing rates of mbr by 25 and 50% did not negatively affect tomato yield or root-knot nematode galling when applied under VIF film as compared to a full rate of mbr in conjunction with standard polyethylene mulch. Five different sting nematode isolates tested were pathogenic on strawberry, but the isolate from strawberry was the most virulent of all isolates tested. Sting nematode negatively impacted all commercial strawberry cultivars tested. The nematode caused a reduction in yield and plant root weights; however, in one experiment, sting nematode reproduction did not differ among the cultivars tested.
