Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 10: November, 1944 After some practical advice on games and sport, Lord Gray recommends gardening as a recreation which increases in richness and satisfaction the longer one engages in it. And gardening, along with fishing, helps to introduce us to one of Lord Gray's main themes, Nature, which he talks about under the idea of appreciating the beauty of the world. He says that our appreciation of this beauty may amount to no more than seeing what sort of weather it is day by day. He is a country man and says that, at least, it is always some sort of a day, in the country. But he, himself, has not stopped there, and his book is full of wise and poetic, and at the same time, acutely accurate observations of birds, fish, Woods and fields, the sea, and the stars. Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 10: June, 1944 Another significant and unique thing is that while the Board was set up under the Constitution of 1868, we have had in that long period Only four Chairmen of this Board. I have no doubt that there are those who thought that perhaps Colonel Blair had been the only Chairman, and, if measured in achievement, we may reach that conclusion, but as we look at him with his youthful eye and still vigorous manner and more than that, a youthful heart, we could not expect the period of his service to run quite that long. Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 31: May 1956 The two major divisions of the law are criminal law and civil law. Criminal cases are those brought by the state against a citizen. The purpose of the criminal case is not to give redress to an injured citizen but to determine whether one accused of anti-social action is guilty as charged, and to provide appropriate punishment if the accused person is found guilty of such conduct. Criminal cases are further broken down as felonies and misdemean ors, with felonies being the more serious and misdemeanors the less serious crimes. Civil cases are cases brought by 'one citizen against an other citizen in which the first citizen seeks to recover dam ages or obtain other relief) from the second citizen because of some act or failure to act on behalf of the second citizen. There is less social interest in the civil case than in the criminal case. In the civil case society merely provides the court system as a forum for use by the injured citizen to seek redress for his wrong. The purpose is to provide a means by which an injured citizen can get redress for an injury done him. The civil suit may involve a suit for damages for breach of contract, a tort action for damages, or a special proceeding (such as bankruptcy or the pro bate of a will). There are several types of tort actions. For example, a suit for damages for malpractice or negli gence, false imprisonment, assault and battery, invasion of right of privacy, libel and slander, etc., are all tort actions.
