When the levee system protecting New Orleans failed and was overtopped in August 2005 following the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, 80 percent of the city was flooded, with a loss of 103,000 homes in the metropolitan area. At least 986 Louisiana residents died. The devastation hit vulnerable communities the hardest: the elderly, the poor, and African-Americans. The disaster exposed shocking inequalities in the city. In response, numerous urban plans and myriad architectural projects were proposed. Nearly nine years later, debates about planning and design for recovery, renewal, and resilience continue. This bold, challenging, and informed book gathers together a panorama of responses from writers, architects, planners, historians, and activists-including Mike Davis, Rebecca Solnit, Naomi Klein, Denise Scott Brown, and M. Christine Boyer-and searches for answers to one of the most important questions of our age: How can we plan for the urban future, creating more environmentally sustainable, economically robust, and socially equitable places to live? On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and destroyed the lives of many. It also claimed the lives of hundreds and a thousand more. Howerever, what was the most tragic of all was the next storm that hit the Gulf Coast: The Federal Government. Many people turned to the government for help, but instead of an immediate response to this tragic event, their cries fell on deaf ears. They were told to help themselves. "If you can't help yourselves, then that's just tough." That was the message that was received by the people from the government. During those faith testing, physical draining, and mental waining days, however, some people survived. At almost every glance, in some way or another, they stared danger and death in it's face. But, their will to live kept them going. Their testimony is present here in this book. This book also documents the pains of poverty and the diabolic forms of racism that was used not only in the government's response, but also among some citizens that were sparred the wrath of Katrina. It also documents the struggle for those trying to rebuild their lives and the pain that continues from wreckless negligence. Despite the pain, this book attempts to document the great spirit of New Orleans and it's people that fight for their right of return. The purpose of this book is to bring out the truth. It's purpose is not just to tell the testimonies of those that stayed, but to also break down what really happened at that time. So I end with this question: Was it the wrath of Katrina that destroyed New Orleans or was it something more sinister?

The coasts of today's American South feature luxury condominiums, resorts, and gated communities, yet just a century ago, a surprising amount of beachfront property in the Chesapeake, along the Carolina shores, and around the Gulf of Mexico was owned and populated by African Americans. Blending social and environmental history, Andrew W. Kahrl tells the story of African American–owned beaches in the twentieth century. By reconstructing African American life along the coast, Kahrl demonstrates just how important these properties were for African American communities and leisure, as well as for economic empowerment, especially during the era of the Jim Crow South. However, in the wake of the civil rights movement and amid the growing prosperity of the Sunbelt, many African Americans fell victim to effective campaigns to dispossess black landowners of their properties and beaches. Kahrl makes a signal contribution to our understanding of African American landowners and real-estate developers, as well as the development of coastal capitalism along the southern seaboard, tying the creation of overdeveloped, unsustainable coastlines to the unmaking of black communities and cultures along the shore. "The legacy of the Modern Movement has gained legendary status, largely as a result of the appreciation of the masterworks and the visionary architectural concepts. In the reality of everyday life, however, it has been difficult to maintain the architectural creations of the Modern Movement in such a way that they still reflect the original intentions of their designers. Many buildings and ensembles of the Modern Movement have already been saved; the icons amongst these have even become so precious that they are treated like pieces of art rather than as buildings in everyday use. But despite the successes that have been achieved, many buildings and ensembles are still at risk of demolition or maltreatment. The bi-annul international conference is one means by which it is possible to continue furthering the aims of Docomomo. Knowing that many modern architects aimed at functionality and changeability, the challenge for today is how to deal with the modern heritage in relation to its continuously changing context, including physical, economic and functional changes, as well as socio-cultural, political and scientific ones.
