This he assumes to be the general feeling of the people in the free States, as he has rarely found an instance to the contrary. We, therefore, of the free States, (we speak for the great body of the people, ) do not yield to the Abolitionists a whit in our opposition to slavery; we differ from them only as to the mode of getting rid of the evil. We claim to be the true friends of the slave, while we believe them to be pursuing a course hos tile to his best interests, and unfavorable to his emancipation.
