Policy Options for a New South Africa

Policy Options for a New South Africa PDF Author: University of the Witwatersrand. Centre for Policy Studies
Publisher: Pretoria, South Africa : HSRC Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Policy sciences
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
The book follows a fresh approach to policy studies. In contrast to other studies in this field which normally promote single substitute proposals to address a specific policy issue, this volume stresses the open-ended nature of policy making by identifying and assessing alternate policies which may be considered, given different value assumptions by policy makers. It is the most compehensive attempt yet to present a comparative analysis and assessment of what experts regard as the most realistic and feasible alternative policy routes to social, political and economic transformation. The inter-related nature of policy making (the fact that changes in one sector affect other sectors of society), is stressed throughout the analyses. Some theoretical perspectives on policy making are also given, to summarise the existing state of the art for the reader. It is intended for decision-makers in all spheres of society involved with the issues in question, for scholars and students who study these issues, for opinion-makers who want to keep abreast with the various policy options available and their implications, and also for the layman who is interested in what promises or threats the future may hold.

Constitutional Options for a Democratic South Africa

Constitutional Options for a Democratic South Africa PDF Author: Ziyad Motala
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780882581873
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Constitutional Options for a Democratic South Africa describes the unjust South African political and judicial apartheid system that exploited black South Africans. Ziyad Motala emphasizes the importance of a constitution and state system that would not only ameliorate the enormous inequalities generated by colonialism and apartheid but also ensure equal democratic rights and protection to all citizens in the post-apartheid South Africa. He carefully examines and compares the political outcomes of post-independent African states adopting (1) the Western liberal federal state, (2) the Soviet-inspired Marxist unitary state, or (3) the locally inspired one-party African socialist state. Motala weighs the relative merits of these state structures for dealing with the complex of democracy, socioeconomic development, and national unity in multiethnic states. He contends that the constitutions and state practices employed thus far by African states have not facilitated political and socioeconomic development, and recommends different constitutional and state options for South Africa.

The Opening of the Apartheid Mind

The Opening of the Apartheid Mind PDF Author: Heribert Adam
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520354761
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Refusing to be governed by what is fashionable or inoffensive, Heribert Adam and Kogila Moodley frankly address the passions and rationalities that drive politics in post-apartheid South Africa. They argue that the country's quest for democracy is widely misunderstood and that public opinion abroad relies on stereotypes of violent tribalism and false colonial analogies. Adam and Moodley criticize the personality cult surrounding Nelson Mandela and the accolades accorded F. W. de Klerk. They reject the black-versus-white conflict and substitute sober analysis and strategic pragmatism for the moral outrage that typifies so much writing about South Africa. Believing that the best expression of solidarity emanates from sympathetic but candid criticism, they pose challenging questions for the African National Congress and Nelson Mandela. They give in-depth coverage to political violence, the ANC-South African Communist Party alliance, Inkatha, and other controversial topics as well. The authors do not propose a solution that will guarantee a genuinely democratic South Africa. What they offer is an understanding of the country's social conditions and political constraints, and they sketch options for both a new South Africa and a new post-Cold War foreign policy for the whole of southern Africa. The importance of this book is as immediate as today's headlines.
