Book Description
Even before the election of Barack Obama, Americans were beginning to notice that the country had changed direction. Five years into his presidency, neither he nor the legislators in Congress are willing to do the work necessary to solve our problems. Critical thinking may not be sexy, but it's what will enable us to overcome our most formidable challenges. Author Mark Goshdigian, an everyday American concerned about the nation's future, bucks the trend in a series of essays that pose tough questions: Can the federal government and Federal Reserve continue to turbo-charge the economy by spending so much money? How has globalization affected the United States? What can we do to fight an entitlement culture? Can we still learn from our failures and dare to be great? Whether you're a government worker, politician, voter, or student, you owe it to yourself to examine the economy, the nation's social issues, and the political process so we can move beyond the talking points.

Turning Points—Actual and Alternate Histories

Turning Points—Actual and Alternate Histories PDF Author: Rodney P. Carlisle
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1851098860
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
This fascinating work is a series of explorations of key events in the adminstrations of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, each of which speculates on what might have happened if events had unfolded differently. The Reagan Era explores a time that saw the rise of the political conservatism that has dominated U.S. politics in recent years, as well as the end of the Cold War, which drove American foreign policy for nearly a half century. What if Jimmy Carter had successfully navigated the energy shortage and the Iranian hostage crisis? What if the assassination attempt on Reagan had succeed? What if Iran–Contra had not become a scandal? These are among the specific topics examined in the book, which looks at 11 crucial events and speculates on the effects of alternative outcomes. By showing how easily the world might be different, The Reagan Era reveals the lasting impact of that era's defining moments.

Homotopy Methods in Topological Fixed and Periodic Points Theory

Homotopy Methods in Topological Fixed and Periodic Points Theory PDF Author: Jerzy Jezierski

Book Description
The notion of a ?xed point plays a crucial role in numerous branches of mat- maticsand its applications. Informationabout the existence of such pointsis often the crucial argument in solving a problem. In particular, topological methods of ?xed point theory have been an increasing focus of interest over the last century. These topological methods of ?xed point theory are divided, roughly speaking, into two types. The ?rst type includes such as the Banach Contraction Principle where the assumptions on the space can be very mild but a small change of the map can remove the ?xed point. The second type, on the other hand, such as the Brouwer and Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorems, give the existence of a ?xed point not only for a given map but also for any its deformations. This book is an exposition of a part of the topological ?xed and periodic point theory, of this second type, based on the notions of Lefschetz and Nielsen numbers. Since both notions are homotopyinvariants, the deformationis used as an essential method, and the assertions of theorems typically state the existence of ?xed or periodic points for every map of the whole homotopy class, we refer to them as homotopy methods of the topological ?xed and periodic point theory.

Nonparametric Methods in Change Point Problems

Nonparametric Methods in Change Point Problems PDF Author: E. Brodsky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401581630
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
The explosive development of information science and technology puts in new problems involving statistical data analysis. These problems result from higher re quirements concerning the reliability of statistical decisions, the accuracy of math ematical models and the quality of control in complex systems. A new aspect of statistical analysis has emerged, closely connected with one of the basic questions of cynergetics: how to "compress" large volumes of experimental data in order to extract the most valuable information from data observed. De tection of large "homogeneous" segments of data enables one to identify "hidden" regularities in an object's behavior, to create mathematical models for each seg ment of homogeneity, to choose an appropriate control, etc. Statistical methods dealing with the detection of changes in the characteristics of random processes can be of great use in all these problems. These methods have accompanied the rapid growth in data beginning from the middle of our century. According to a tradition of more than thirty years, we call this sphere of statistical analysis the "theory of change-point detection. " During the last fifteen years, we have witnessed many exciting developments in the theory of change-point detection. New promising directions of research have emerged, and traditional trends have flourished anew. Despite this, most of the results are widely scattered in the literature and few monographs exist. A real need has arisen for up-to-date books which present an account of important current research trends, one of which is the theory of non parametric change--point detection.
