Book Description
"The goal of this study is to provide FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] AST [Office of the Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation] with technical support in formulating effective policies and regulations that address issues associated with the air traffic management (ATM) of commercially-operated, suborbital PTP transportation focused on the long distance delivery of both humans and crago. The Volpe Center examined the issues associated with integrating PTP Systems into the NAS [National Airspace] and international airspace by: [1] Identifying institutional, operational, and technical issues that must be addressed for launching and operating either supersonic or hypersonic point-to-point (PTP) systems in or through the U.S. National Airspace System (NAS) and betwween international/transcontinental city pairs. This report does not address PTP economic issues. [2] Prioritizing the issues, ranking them from 'most challenging' to 'least challenging, ' and explaining the rationale for the issue ranking. [3] Providing and prioritizing insights into path forward to resolves the issues."--Objectives (p. 1).

Book Description
The advent of suborbital transport brings promise of point-to-point (PTP) long distance transportation as a revolutionary mode of air transportation. In 2008, the International Space University (ISU) of Strasbourg, France, published a report1 documenting its appraisal of PTP transportation technology. This report describes the conditions that should be put in place to foster and sustain the growth of this industry from the technical, market, financial, infrastructure, safety, and legal perspectives. The ISU study calculates that transatlantic flight times for suborbital vehicles from London to New York would take less than 1 ΒΌ hours, less than one-third the travel time required by the supersonic aircraft Concorde and a fraction of that required by conventional commercial aircraft. This potential for the rapid global transport of passengers and the fast distribution of goods and services make PTP transportation an attractive space technology concept worth exploiting.

Commercial Space Transportation: Industry Trends and Key Issues Affecting Federal Oversight and International Competitiveness

Commercial Space Transportation: Industry Trends and Key Issues Affecting Federal Oversight and International Competitiveness PDF Author: Gerald L. Dillingham
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437985483
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 25

Book Description
The commercial space launch industry has evolved and moved further toward space tourism. Commercial space tourism promises to make human space travel available to the public for the first time. In addition, NASA plans to use private companies to transport cargo, and eventually personnel, to the International Space Station after NASA retires the space shuttle later in 2011. The FAA oversees the safety of commercial space launches, licensing and monitoring the safety of such launches and of commercial spaceports, and promotes the industry. This testimony addresses: (1) recent industry trends; (2) FAA's related budget request for FY 2012; and (3) challenges that FAA and industry faces. Illustrations. This is a print on demand report.

Space Safety Regulations and Standards

Space Safety Regulations and Standards PDF Author: Joseph N. Pelton
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080961924
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 546

Book Description
When international rules and regulations governing space travel were first being developed, only a few countries had any space presence and commercial space activity was non-existent. Today, over 50 countries have on-orbit satellites and commercial space presence is essential to commercial telecommunications and broadcasting, yet international space law remains in its infancy.Space Safety Regulations and Standards is the definitive book on regulatory initiatives involving space safety, new space safety standards, and safety related to new space technologies under development. More than 30 world experts come together in this book to share their detailed knowledge of regulatory and standard making processes in the area, combining otherwise disparate information into one essential reference and providing case studies to illustrate applications throughout space programs internationally. They address the international regulatory framework that relates to traditional space safety programs as well as the emerging regulatory framework that relates to commercial space programs, space tourism, and efforts to create commercial space station facilities. Fully endorsed by the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) and provides the only definitive reference on regulations and standards for the field of space safety Combines the technical, legal and regulatory information in a clear and integrated reference work suitable for technical professionals, regulators, legal experts, and students in the field Presents a truly global insight from experienced space safety experts worldwide, with representatives from the leading associations, institutions and companies operating in the arena today
