Book Description
Excerpt from Poems of John Donne John Donne's Poems were originally undertaken for The Muses Library by Dr. Brinsley Nicholson. They were handed over to me shortly after his death in 1891. I have had the advantage of the material which Dr. Nicholson had brought together; but for the book as it stands, with the exception of the Introduction which Mr. Saintsbury has kindly contributed, I am alone responsible. The bulk of the text is based upon the principal seventeenth-century editions, those of 1633, 1635, 1650 and 1669. No one of these is of supreme authority, and therefore I have had no choice but to be eclectic. But at the same time I have endeavoured to give all variants, other than obvious misprints, in the footnotes. Here and there one or other of the innumerable Ms. copies has been of service. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 1: From the d104 of the Edition of 1633 Donne's Poems were, from an early period of his life, among Mr. Lowell's favorite books. In 1855 an edition of them was included, I believe at his instance, in the series of "British Poets" then in course of publication by Little, Brown & Company, in Boston. It was, apparently, a reprint, without material change, from one of the later English editions, and, like all previous editions, it stood greatly in need of editorial revision. Few of Donne's poems were printed during his lifetime. In the first collection of them, which appeared in 1633, two years after his death, they were jumbled together in no intelligible order, and with no regard to the dates of their composition, while the text shows that indifference to correct punctuation and to uniformity of spelling which was characteristic of much of the writing and presswork of those days. No poems require more care in printing, for the thought is often intricate, the diction often involved, so that for understanding them every help is needed that can be given by the press. Even with such help many passages remain difficult, and some seem corrupt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 1: Edited From the Old Editions and Numerous Manuscripts; With Introductions Commentary; The Text of the Poems With Appendixes A short examination of the manuscripts convinced me that it would be very unsafe to base a text on any single extant manuscript, or even to make an eclectic use of a few of them, taking, now from one, now from another, what seemed a probable emendation. On the other hand it became clear that if as wide a collation as possible of extant manuscripts were made one would be able to establish in many cases what was, whether right or wrong, the traditional reading before any printed edition appeared. Excerpt from The Poems of John Donne, Vol. 2: Edited From the Old Editions and Numerous Manuscripts With Introductions Commentary He affects the metaphysics, not only in his satires, but in his amorous verses, where nature only should reign; and perplexes the minds of the fair sex with nice speculations of philosophy, when he should engage their hearts, and entertain them with the softnesses of love. In this (if I may be pardoned for so bold a truth) Mr. Cowley has copied him to a fauAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Dr. John Donne: With a Memoir Spirit of poetry, than with that of religion: so it is not only the noise of drums and trumpets, which have drowned the Muses' harmony, or the fear that the church's ruin will destroy the priests likewise, that now frights them from this country, where they have been so ingeniously received; but these rude pretenders to excellences they unjustly own, who profanely rushing into Miner va's temple, with noisome airs blast the laurel, which thunder cannot hurt. In this sad condition, these learned sisters are fled over to beg your lordship's protection, who have been so certain a patron both to arts and arms, and who, in this general confusion, have so entirely preserved your honor, that in your lordship we may still read a most perfect character of what England was in all her pomp and greatness. So that although these poems were formerly written, upon several occasions, to several persons, they now unite themselves, and are become one pyramid to set your lordship's statue upon where you may stand, like armed Apollo, the defender of the Muses, encouraging the poets now alive to celebrate your great acts, by affording your countenance to his poems, that wanted only so noble a subject. My Lord, Your most humble servant, john donne.* The eldest son of the poet, and editor of several of his father's works.
