Essays on Poetry
Author: John Collings Squire

Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 234
Book Description
Excerpt from Essays on Poetry The first two papers in this volume were delivered as lectures at the Royal Institution on February 3rd and l0th, 1923. They were spoken from brief notes; the shorthand report has been, in places, emended; but the lectures have been left as lectures. I found that if I attempted to alter them I should expand them indefinitely. Of the others, the majority appeared in The London Mercury, and most of the rest in The Observer, to whose editor I am grateful. One was a preface to Mr. I. A. Williams' Byways round Helicon, which Messrs. Heinemann allow me to reprint. The paper on Tennyson was printed two years before the publication of two books which have recently recalled attention to his work. The connection of the last essay, which is nominally about prose, with the others will be evident to anybody who is at the pains to read it.
