Blessed with vast expanses of virgin timber, a good harbor, and a San Francisco market for its lumber, the Coos Bay area once dubbed itself "a poor man's paradise." A new Prologue and Epilogue by the author bring this story of gyppo loggers, longshoremen, millwrights, and whistle punks into the twenty-first century, describing Coos Bay’s transition from timber town to a retirement and tourist community, where the site of a former Weyerhaeuser complex is now home to the Coquille Indian Tribe’s The Mill Casino.

Book Description
Throughout the development of the American West, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of the nineteenth-century Pacific Northwest. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the hazards of disease, drug addiction, physical abuse, and pregnancy. They dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today.

Book Description
This case study examines the socioeconomic changes that took place between 1990 and 2000 in and around lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Coos Bay District in southwestern Oregon for purposes of assessing the effects of the Northwest Forest Plan (the Plan) on rural economies and communities in the Coos Bay region. The case study included an analysis of changes in the districts programs, as well as socioeconomic changes that occurred within the communities of Coos Bay, Myrtle Point, and Reedsport. Data were gathered during 2003 and 2004 from multiple sources including U.S. census databases, county and state criminal justice and economic development databases, and BLM annual reports. Interviews with BLM employees and community residents provided additional insights on how the Plan affected local socioeconomic conditions and the districts interactions with local communities.

Plundertown, U.S.A.

Plundertown, U.S.A. PDF Author: Al Sandine
Publisher: Surrey, B.C. : Hancock House
ISBN: 9780888395252
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
By taking this heart-rending journey into his own luminous past and the more remote and sombre past of the lumber-town where he grew up, Al Sandine has masterfully laid bare some of the most crucial issues facing America and the world today. An important, accessible, daring book, of interest to anyone puzzled and outraged by the dilemmas and secrets of globalisation. Upon visiting his hometown of Coos Bay on Oregon's rainy coast in 1998, the author was shocked by the transformation of the major lumber port that he recalled from childhood into an economic disaster zone. This book tells the story of how corporate greed destroyed a way of life. Blending historical records with political passion, Plundertown, USA provides a regional, national, and global context for the area's decline and points the way to a better future for other places like Coos Bay.
