Book Description
Excerpt from Pleasure and Profit in Bible Study Word and Work make healthy Christians. If it be all Word and no work, people will suffer from what I may call religious gout. On the other hand if it be all work and no Word, it will not be long before they will fall into all kinds of sin and error; so that they will do more harm than good. But if we first study the Word and then go to work, we shall be healthy, useful Christians. I never saw a fruit-bearing Chris tian who was not a student of the Bible. If a man neglects his Bible, he may pray and ask God to use him in His work; but God cannot make use of him, for there is not much for the Holy Ghost to 'work Upon. We must have the Word itself, which is sharper than any two-edged sword. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Close Contact with the Word of God-Word and Work-The Christian's Weapon-Young Converts and Bible Study-Up to Date-Every Case Met-"Great Peace"-Starving the Soul-The Guide-Book to Heaven. A QUICKENING that will last must come through the Word of God. A man stood up in one of our meetings and said he hoped for enough out of the series of meetings to last him all his life. I told him he might as well try to eat enough breakfast at one time to last him his lifetime. That is a mistake that people are making; they are running to religious meetings and they think the meetings are going to do the work. But if these don't bring you into closer contact with the Word of God, the whole impression will be gone in three months. The more you love the Scriptures, the firmer will be your faith. There is little backsliding when people love the Scriptures. If you come into closer contact with the Word, you will gain something that will last, because the Word of God is going to endure. In the one hundred and nineteenth psalm David prayed nine times that God would quicken him- according to His word, His law, His judgment, His precepts, etc. If I could say something that would induce Christians to have a deeper love for the Word of God, I should feel this to be the most important service that could be rendered to them. Do you ask: How can I get in love with the Bible? Well, if you will only arouse yourself to the study of it, and ask God's assistance, He will assuredly help you.

And Moody's advice covers an entire gamut of subjects from methods of Bible study to advice for those engaged in winning others to Christ. Moody writes like what he is: a great 19th-century preacher. He doesn't talk down to his audience, or try to make things too easy. He simply tells them what works for him, asks them to try it, then tells them if it doesn't work then to try something else. The instruction cannot be anything simpler than what Mr. Moody explains in this book i.e. "Read, Mark, Study your Bible". A very practical book with helpful suggestions and hints on how to study the Bible and feed on the Word. This book certainly inspires and drives you to pick up and read your Bible. Book Description
Dwight L. Moody, in full Dwight Lyman Moody, (born February 5, 1837, East Northfield, Massachusetts, U.S.--died December 22, 1899, Northfield, Massachusetts), prominent American evangelist who set the pattern for later evangelism in large cities. Moody left his mother's farm at age 17 to work in Boston and there was converted from Unitarianism to evangelicalism. In 1856 he moved to Chicago and prospered as a shoe salesman but in 1860 gave up business for missionary work. He worked with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA; 1861-73), was president of the Chicago YMCA, founded the Moody Church, and engaged in slum mission work. In 1870 he met Ira D. Sankey, a hymn writer, and with him became noted for contributing to the growth of the "gospel hymn." They made extended evangelical tours in Great Britain (1873-75, 1881-84). Moody shunned divisive sectarian doctrines, deplored "higher criticism" of the Bible, the Social Gospel movement, and the theory of evolution. Instead he colourfully and intensely preached "the old-fashioned gospel," emphasizing a literal interpretation of the Bible and looking toward the premillennial Second Coming. Moody's mass revivals were financed by prominent businessmen who believed he would alleviate the hardships of the poor. Moody himself ardently supported various charities but felt that social problems could be solved only by the divine regeneration of individuals. As well as conducting revivals, he directed annual Bible conferences at Northfield, Massachusetts, where he founded a seminary for girls in 1879. In 1889 he founded the Chicago Bible Institute (now the Moody Bible Institute). (britannica.com)
