Plasticity in the Central Nervous System

Plasticity in the Central Nervous System PDF Author: James L. McGaugh
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317729013
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Catalyzed by the development of new neurobiological and behavioral techniques as well as new conceptual and theoretical approaches to the study of the relationship between brain and behavior, research exploring brain functions enabling learning and memory has greatly accelerated in recent years. The chapters in this book reflect current theoretical approaches to the study of brain and memory and provide new insights concerning the cellular bases of memory and the differential involvement of brain systems in different forms of memory. By presenting up-to-date summaries of research investigating brain mechanisms underlying learning and memory, these chapters help to place current findings in appropriate theoretical context, and further stimulate research inquiry attempting to understand how the brain makes memory. Divided into three sections, coverage in this volume includes: * a discussion of pharmacological approaches to the study of brain and memory; * a review of experiments using a variety of techniques, including brain lesions, brain grafting, and electrophysiological recording to investigate the role of different brain regions in learning and memory; and * an examination of molecular analyses of events associated with memory formation.

Plasticity and Morphology of the Central Nervous System

Plasticity and Morphology of the Central Nervous System PDF Author: C.L. Cazzullo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400908512
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
In the last few years ways of thinking in psychiatry have undergone considerable change thanks to advances in the fields of morphology and plasticity of the CNS, particularly with regard to schizophrenic and mood disorders. In addition, the rapid and considerable development of neuroimaging techniques (CT, MRI, PET and computerized EEG) and of molecular genetics (through DNA recombinant meth odologies) have widened the approach to these disorders in a way unimagined a few years ago. These advances and the new etiopathogenetic hypotheses that have sprung from them were the central theme of the Second International Meeting on Schizophre nia "Morphology and Plasticity of the Central Nervous System - A Challenge for Psychiatry of the Nineties" which was organized by the Association for Research on Schizophrenia (ARS), the Schizophrenia Research Center of the Institute of Psychiatry of the University of Milan and the T. and F. Legrenzi Foundation, held in Milan on October 22-24, 1987. This book contains the contributions from participants of the meeting, which took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere and marked by lively and exhaustive discussions on the various papers. The contributions were recently revised for the present publication. We would like to express our appreciation to the book's contributors for the high quality of their reports.

Plasticity in the Nervous System PDF Author: Boris I. Kotliar
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9782881245251
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Reviews aspects of nervous plasticity, emphasizing how the higher nervous activity of humans and animals are an expression of plastic properties of the brain. Covers the plasticity of nerve cells and its mechanisms, plasticity of the brain as the basis of individual forms of adaptive behavior, and its role in disturbances of brain function. Updated and translated from the award-winning 1986 edition, which is now a standard text in many neuroscience departments. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Neural Plasticity and Disorders of the Nervous System

Neural Plasticity and Disorders of the Nervous System PDF Author: Aage R. Møller
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139447998
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
Neural Plasticity and Disorders of the Nervous System provides comprehensive coverage of the pathophysiology of neurological disorders emphasising those disorders where expression of plasticity is evident. Including the basis for the expression of neural plasticity; how reorganisation of the nervous system can cause hyperactivity in sensory systems producing central neuropathic pain, tinnitus and paresthesia; the role of little-known non-classical pathways in pain and sensory disorders and their subcortical connections; hyper- and hypoactivity of motor systems after injury, and the role of spinal reflexes and internal processing in the spinal cord. Phantom symptoms and disorders of nerves and associated disorders are discussed, along with disorders that can be cured by microvascular decompression operations. A detailed and comprehensive description of the organisation of pain circuits and sensory and motor nervous systems is also included. This 2006 text is aimed at students and graduates of neuroscience and medicine.

Post-Lesion Neural Plasticity

Post-Lesion Neural Plasticity PDF Author: Hans Flohr
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642738494
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 692

Book Description
Neural networks are not rigidly wired but rather highly plastic structures, the functional architecture of which can be actively reorganized in response to external or internal events. Lesions of such networks induce plastic processes which in time may lead to a recovery of the initially disrupted function. This type of neural plasticity is the main focus of the book, which presents a broad spectrum of experimental paradigms for lesion-induced plasticity as in the spinal cord, the vestibular, oculomotor, visual and olfactory system, the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex, including recent methodological developments. Concepts and perspectives in understanding neural plasticity are reported in reviews and original research reports and are thoroughly discussed.

Mutable Brain

Mutable Brain PDF Author: Jon H. Kaas
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0203304608
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 462

Book Description
The extremely labile nature of the nervous system has proved an intriguing area of research for over thirty years. From the earliest stages of neuronal growth during development, both the morphology and strength of neuronal connections within the central nervous system are shaped and modified by experience. While connections between neurons that are continually stimulated are strengthened, redundant connections weaken and are eventually lost. The Mutable Brain provides a comprehensive introduction to plasticity of the brain and neural circuits whilst covering the history of neurological research, from early work on the developing visual system, right through to current state-of-the-art molecular techniques. Authored by leading researchers in the field, it address a range of research areas, including ongoing research on the behavioural significance of hippocampal plasticity, the mediation of avian vocal learning by neural plasticity and the dynamicity of the somatosensory system with its multi-hierarchical interactions. Together, these chapters provide a broad, introductory overview of current views on neuronal plasticity.

Book Description
The Leitmotiv of the Second Convention of the Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica was "Cerebrum convalescit" - literally "the brain recovers". The focus of the meeting was on plasticity of the central nervous system, one of the most decisive factors in recovery and readaption after cerebral lesions. Distinguished experts from the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, neurophysiology, anatomy, pathology, oncology, and pharmacology discussed the following topics: - Molecular and cellular basis of plasticity - Regeneration and growth in the CNS - Self-organization of neuronal network - Brain oedema - a reparatory process? - Growth factors and carcinogenesis

Plasticity in the Somatosensory System of Developing and Mature Mammals — The Effects of Injury to the Central and Peripheral Nervous System

Plasticity in the Somatosensory System of Developing and Mature Mammals — The Effects of Injury to the Central and Peripheral Nervous System PDF Author: Peter J. Snow
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642757014
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
Rarely have the many mechanisms that might underlie neural plasticity been examined as explicitly as they are in this broad, lavishly illustrated treatment of plasticity in the somatosensory system. The reader is provided with state-of-the-art knowledge of connections at all levels of the somatosensory system. The authors examine the propensity for changes of connectivity in both the mature and developing mammal and make clear proposals regarding the mechanisms underlying these changes. Their functional significance to relevant psychophysical and neurological observations is also discussed.
