Book Description
Lubliner suggested that the uniaxial constitutive equation (1.1) be used in the numerical solution of wave-propagation problems, and that the results approximating those of either hypothesis may be obtained in extreme cases. He further showed on the basis of an extremely simple, piece-wise linear, model of plastic-viscoplastic behavior, that results approaching the viscoplastic hypothesis will be obtained under one or more of the following circumstances: (1) weak impact, (2) long bar, (3) short 'relaxation' time (or natural time of the material); that converse conditions will lead to results approaching the plastic hypothesis; and that intermediate conditions require the use of the general constitutive equation. The purpose of the present study is to test further the validity of Lubliner's suggestions by means of numerical solutions of representative wave-propagation problems in bars whose mechanical behavior is described by the uniaxial constitutive equation, slightly modified to account for loading-unloading behavior.

Book Description
This report summarizes the work completed on a project concerned with engineering models in dyanmic plasticity. The concept of the endochronic theory of viscoplasticity and its subsequent improvement are discussed briefly. Applications and extensions of the theory to various dynamic problems are presented. In particular, the strain-rate effect in the improved endochronic theory and its application to wave propagation problems are discussed. Comparing the numerical results with other calculations and experimental data, it appears that endochronic theory provides a promising representation of realistic material behavior. At the same time endochronic theory is often numerically more efficient than other formulations.

Some Recently Developed Aspects of Plastic Wave Analysis

Book Description
The analysis of the propagation of plastic waves for one-dimensional stress and one-dimensional strain are compared and contrasted. The former pertains to waves along a thin rod or wire, the latter to waves through a slab. The influence of finite strain is studied in some detail. The theory of the propagation of plastic waves of combined stresses is reviewed with particular emphasis on the waves propagated in one space dimension due to the application of perpendicular, independent, uniform shear tractions on the surface of a half-space. Solutions obtained numerically from characteristic theory are discussed, and some unexpected features of the coupling between stress components are remarked upon. Simple wave solutions are also reviewed, and aspects pertinent to tests for dynamic plastic material characteristics are mentioned. Some recent work clarifying aspects of the determination of elastic-plastic boundaries is also described. (Author).

Book Description
Tremendous advances in computer technologies and methods have precipitated a great demand for refinements in the constitutive models of plasticity. Such refinements include the development of a model that would account for material anisotropy and produces results that compare well with experimental data. Key to developing such models-and to meeting

Book Description
Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline forged and shaped by the needs of the industrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of productivity and competitiveness that require engineering solutions, among others . The Mechanical Engineering Series features graduate texts and research monographs intended to address the need for information in contemporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that covers a broad range of c- centrations important to mechanical engineering graduate education and research . We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors on the ad- sory board, each an expert in one of the areas of concentration . The names of the consulting editors are listed on the facing page of this volume . The areas of conc- tration are applied mechanics, biomechanics, computational mechanics, dynamic systems and control, energetics , mechanics of materials, processing, production systems, thermal science, and tribology .
