O Brasil detém a maior riqueza de flora em âmbito mundial e de remanescentes de ecossistemas tropicais. Assim, observamos nas diferentes regiões a ocorrência de centenas de espécies da biodiversidade com alto valor ecológico, genético, social, econômico, científico, educacional, cultural e estético. Essa é uma enorme vantagem comparativa para o país, que precisa conhecer a flora nativa para promover sua utilização. Na medida em que valorizamos e utilizamos a nossa biodiversidade, aumentamos a preservação, ampliamos o número de espécies utilizadas, que vem se restringindo nos últimos anos, e contribuímos para a adaptação às mudanças do clima, com o emprego de plantas mais adaptadas às condições brasileiras. Hoje, a exploração sustentável do nosso patrimônio genético é limitada às áreas de ocorrência natural e envolve atividades complexas, desde a bioprospecção e pesquisa, até a indústria de transformação, produção, criação de mercados e comercialização. O Ministério do Meio Ambiente desenvolveu, para lidar com o tema, a Iniciativa Plantas para o Futuro, que visa à identificação de espécies nativas que possam ser utilizadas como opções para a agricultura familiar na diversificação do cultivo, ampliação das oportunidades de investimento pelo setor empresarial em produtos com a cara do Brasil, e para redução da vulnerabilidade do sistema alimentar. A partir de ampla parceria com instituições governamentais e não governamentais, com os setores acadêmico e empresarial, e movimentos sociais, a Iniciativa vem construindo estratégias que contribuem, também, para o resgate, valorização e proteção dos conhecimentos tradicionais, dos saberes e sabores da culinária tradicional e popular brasileira. A presente obra compõe a série de livros sobre as espécies nativas das cinco regiões geográficas brasileiras – já estão publicados os volumes sobre as regiões Sul e CentroOeste. Com 154 espécies descritas em dez diferentes grupos de uso, reúne os principais dados sobre a flora do Nordeste e seu potencial de uso, oferecendo um grande impulso ao aproveitamento e agregação de valor à biodiversidade da Região.

In the early modern Atlantic World, pharmacopoeias—official lists of medicaments and medicinal preparations published by municipal, national, or imperial governments—organized the world of healing goods, giving rise to new and valuable medical commodities such as cinchona bark, guaiacum, and ipecac. Pharmacopoeias and related texts, developed by governments and official medical bodies as a means to standardize therapeutic practice, were particularly important to scientific and colonial enterprises. They served, in part, as tools for making sense of encounters with a diversity of peoples, places, and things provoked by the commercial and colonial expansion of early modern Europe. Drugs on the Page explores practices of recording, organizing, and transmitting information about medicinal substances by artisans, colonial officials, indigenous peoples, and others who, unlike European pharmacists and physicians, rarely had a recognized role in the production of official texts and medicines. Drawing on examples across various national and imperial contexts, contributors to this volume offer new and valuable insights into the entangled histories of knowledge resulting from interactions and negotiations between Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans from 1500 to 1850.
