Present tendencies and possible future developments will have attention, and some space will be devoted to a comparison of industrial methods and progress in the chief producing countries. There will be a general bibliography, and also a select bibliography to follow each section. Statistical information will only be introduced in so far as it serves to illustrate the line of argument. Each book will be divided into sections instead of chapters, and the sections will deal with separate branches of the subject in the manner of a special article or monograph. Excerpt from Prewar World Production and Consumption of Plant Foods in Fertilizers The leading prewar producers of nitrogen were Germany, Chile, Japan, and the United States. German production was nearly three times that of Chile and, in fact, slightly exceeded the combined production of Chile, Japan, and the United States. The production of these latter three varied from each other by _less than tons a year. Ger many also was the largest consumer of chemical nitrogen; the United States, Japan, and France followed. German consumption was about 70 per cent greater than that of the United States, more than double that of Japan, and nearly 3% times that of France. Germany ranked fifth with regard to the quantity of nitrogen used per unit area of arable land and fourth for that used on the basis of arable land and permanent meadows and pastures. Consumers of more nitrogen than Germany per unit of arable land were: ' The Netherlands, more than twice as much; the belgo-luxemburg Economic Union, 50 percent more; Japan, about 40 percent more; and Egypt, about 11 percent more. Germany in turn used more than 12 times as much nitrogen per unit of arable land as the United States, which ranked twenty-second. The belgo-luxemburg Economic Union, the Netherlands, and Japan exceeded Ger many in, the use of nitrogen per unit area of arable land and permanent meadows and pastures. Excerpt from Fertilizers and Their Use On our comparatively new lands, and in general farm practice where a judicious rotation of crops is followed. And where grain is fed on the farm and the manure properly cared for, it may not be necessary to use commercial fertilizers; but where the nature of the crops grown prevents rotation, and where very little farmyard manure is produced, they may be required. More and more each year it is found that the increased cost of production and the consequent need of producing maximum crops, and the growing demands of the larger towns and cities for garden and fruit products of high quality, are causing market gardeners and fruit growers to consider seriously the advisability of using some form of fertilizer. This has created a demand for information concerning these substances which it has not been easy to fill; for experience has shown that the farmer must posses a wide knowledge of plants, soils and the fertilizers themselves before he can properly use them. To intelligently and economically use fertilizers, it is essential that the farmer understand the needs of the cr0ps, their power to gather the essential plant food constituents from the soil, and the purpose of their growth, i.e., whether the object is to produce an immature plant for early market, or whether maturity is required. He must also know something about the available supply of plant food' tn the soil and the nature of the fertilizer being used. These fertilizers are expensive, and unless they are intelligently applied in conjunction with very thorough cultivation they will not give their best results. They cannot take the place of cultivation; for they are food materials, and can only aid the growth of the plant as they are absorbed by the roots, and these cannot develop fully in a poorly cultivated soil.
