Welfare Politics in Mexico

Welfare Politics in Mexico PDF Author: Peter Ward
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000933660
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 183

Book Description
When it was originally published in 1986, this was the first book to deal simultaneously with several aspects of social welfare provision in a developing country. The unique contribution of the book is based on the analysis of 3 substantive welfare areas – land (for self-help housing), urban infrastructure and health – which are examined in terms of the nature, motivation and effectiveness of government intervention. The book covers 3 administrations between 1970 and the mid-1980s and sets the analysis in the wider context of Latin American affairs. The author shows that although social welfare expenditure has increased, its importance as a government priority has been sharply eroded.

Human Settlements and Planning for Ecological Sustainability

Human Settlements and Planning for Ecological Sustainability PDF Author: Keith Pezzoli
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 9780262661140
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
In many areas of the world, environmental degradation in and around human settlements is undermining prospects for both socioeconomic justice and ecological sustainability. To explore the issues involved in this worldwide problem, Keith Pezzoli focuses on a dramatic instance of conflict that grew out of the unauthorized penetration of human settlements into the Ajusco greenbelt zone, a vital part of Mexico City's ecological reserve. The heart of the book is the story of what happened when residents of the Ajusco settlements fought relocation by proposing that the areas be transformed into productive ecology settlements. Pezzoli draws upon urban and regional planning theory and practice to examine biophysical as well as ethical and social sides of the story, and he uses the Mexican experience to identify planning strategies to link economy, ecology, and community in sustainable development. -- Publisher description.

Decentralization In Mexico

Decentralization In Mexico PDF Author: Victoria Rodriguez
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429969651
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
This book assesses the impact of decentralization on Mexico’s intergovernmental relations and examines the constraints upon the devolution of political power from the center to the lower levels of government. It also discusses the distribution of power and authority to governments of opposition parties within the context of a more open political space. Victoria Rodríguez uncovers a new paradox in the Mexican political system: retaining power by giving it away. She argues that since the de la Madrid presidency (1982–1988), the Mexican government has embarked upon a major effort of political and administrative decentralization as a means to increase its hold on power. That effort continued under Salinas, but paradoxically led to further centralization. However, since Zedillo assumed the presidency, it has become increasingly clear that the survival of the ruling party and, indeed, the viability of his own government require a genuine, de facto reduction of centralism.

The Mexican Economy

The Mexican Economy PDF Author: George Philip
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040253776
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
First published in 1988, The Mexican Economy presents a comprehensive survey of the Mexican economy and its problems and argues that the crisis has more complex roots within the Mexican economy. It gives an equal weight to the long-term development of the Mexican economy and to the problems that have arisen since 1982. The contributors discuss issues like debt and oil-led development; Mexico’s 1986 financial rescue; the economic crisis and Mexican labour; the Mexican agricultural crisis; agriculture and environment; industrial decentralisation and regional policy, 1970–1986; Pemex and the petroleum sector; policies of the Mexican government towards NFRM; and Mexico’s maquiladora programme. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of economy, history, and political science.
