Pirates and Mutineers of the Nineteenth Century

Pirates and Mutineers of the Nineteenth Century PDF Author: Grace Moore
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351911058
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 458

Book Description
The first volume devoted to literary pirates in the nineteenth century, this collection examines changes in the representation of the pirate from the beginning of the nineteenth century through the late Victorian period. Gone were the dangerous ruffians of the eighteenth-century novel and in their place emerged a set of brooding and lovable rogues, as exemplified by Byron's Corsair. As the contributors engage with acts of piracy by men and women in the literary marketplace as well as on the high seas, they show that both forms were foundational in the promotion and execution of Britain's imperial ambitions. Linking the pirate's development as a literary figure with the history of piracy and the making of the modern state tells us much about race, class, and evolving gender relationships. While individual chapters examine key texts like Treasure Island, Dickens's 1857 'mutiny' story in Household Words, and Peter Pan, the collection as a whole interrogates the growth of pirate myths and folklore throughout the nineteenth century and the depiction of their nautical heirs in contemporary literature and culture.

Anne Bonny the Infamous Female Pirate

Anne Bonny the Infamous Female Pirate PDF Author: Phillip Thomas Tucker
Publisher: Feral House
ISBN: 1627310622
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
The story of the most famous female pirate in history provides a remarkable personal odyssey from a time when women were almost powerless and at the lowest level of the social order on both sides of the Atlantic. This new biographical work fills considerable gaps in Anne Bonny’s life beyond her mythology to rescue an actual person for posterity. After turning her back on everything she knew growing up in South Carolina to find a sense of personal freedom, Anne Bonny sailed the Caribbean’s pristine waters during the Golden Age of Piracy in the early eighteenth century. Few accurate records exist about these law-breakers, whose lifestyles called for hanging. Fortunately, Anne Bonny was a notable exception to the rule, as she was caught off the Jamaican coast and tried by a court of law, whose records have fortunately survived. So, who was the real Anne Bonny? A heartless prostitute, a bloodthirsty psychopathic, or a compassionate woman of faith and courage? Such a fundamental question has not been adequately answered by historians for 300 years. It is now time to take a fresh look at the life of Anne Bonny to present a corrective view into not only her story but also the seldom explored, but incredibly rich, field of women’s history. The Anne Bonny mythology is today popularly told in Starz channel’s Black Sails and the video game Assassin's Creed.

Pages : 40

Book Description
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 John Chatterton and John Mattera were planning a treasure hunt, and they had already moved to the Dominican Republic to start it. They met with Tracy Bowden, a legendary treasure hunter, who showed them coins and artifacts from shipwrecks he’d worked on. #2 In the seventeenth century, a well-respected English sea captain named Joseph Bannister stole the great ship he commanded, the Golden Fleece, and embarked on a pirating rampage. He became one of the most wanted men in the Caribbean. The harder the English tried to stop him, the more ingeniously he defied them. #3 Bowden believed he knew the location of the Golden Fleece, a pirate ship that had sunk off Cayo Levantado in the Dominican Republic. He offered to give Chatterton and Mattera 20 percent of the treasure if they found it. They could never accept his offer, as they knew they could never betray Bowden. #4 The two partners had trained for two years to find treasure, and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on boats and equipment. They had put together a crew, and had nearly gotten into gunfights in wild but beautiful places.
