Pages : 204

Book Description
My father, Jack Friedman, CPA (even if he made the diploma himself), and Purple Heart recipient (even if he lifted it from the guy in the bed next to him in a Tokyo Army hospital), moved to Las Vegas from Atlantic City when he was 78. This is that story. The early years — and by early, I mean his 80s. Voluptuous Bagels and Other Concerns of Jack Friedman is the first volume (there will be three) of my conversations, arguments, buffets, and philosophical musings with my father from the years 2004-2014. There was the “The Mob,” the survivors group of those who buried their spouses, the bowling, the mortgage he got at 84, the possible death of Bernie, the coupons, the long-suffering Jeannette, who buried two husbands, and always the toupees, many kept in boxes in the bedroom, garage, and sometimes out on a table. “I was 16 two weeks ago, Barry. Where did it all go?” Jack Friedman, in his 80s and 90s, couldn’t hear, didn’t listen, had no short-term memory, and mostly didn’t care. It was the perfect time for a son to be re-introduced to his father. As my sister, his daughter, whose name he couldn’t always keep straight, said about our father’s approach to life, “He’s always been like this." I should have started the book sooner.

Take Me to the River

Take Me to the River PDF Author: Peter Alson
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 141652519X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
MEET PETER ALSON An overeducated underachiever, he's spent his postcollege decades doing his best not to grow up. Now, having just turned the incomprehensible (to him) age of fifty, and staring down his own mortality, this rambling- gambling bachelor decides it's time to settle down. After years of equivocating, he pops the question to his longtime girlfriend. A wedding date is set for just after Labor Day, and to pay for it, a plan is hatched involving poker and a trip to Vegas. Alson boards a plane bound for the neon desert on his way to the biggest game in town, the 2005 World Series of Poker. Thus begins Take Me to the River, a first-person account of one inveterate gambler and bad boy's quest to grow up while at the same time compete with more than 5,000 players vying for over $56 million in prize money during a scorching Vegas summer. Take Me to the River is a hilarious, heart-wrenching tale of Las Vegas and an exploration of what it means to be part of one of the fastest-growing and most popular sports in the United States, at the moment of its apogee, and of the lessons that poker has to teach about probability and luck, good and bad fortune, patience, perseverance, and -- most fitting for a man with marriage in his near future -- commitment.

Train Your Brain

Train Your Brain PDF Author: Robert G. Winningham
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040289088
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
"Train Your Brain" was written to provide older adults, and the people who work with them, with practical and scientifically based suggestions and interventions on how to maintain and even improve memory ability. Researchers have found that certain lifestyle factors predict the likelihood of developing memory problems. Most chapters begin with research summaries, followed by practical suggestions for taking advantage of the identified factors that affect memory. The book also contains information and suggestions for people interested in starting a cognitive enhancement program in an assisted living facility, senior center, or medical setting. Two chapters, 'How Memory Works' and 'How the Brain Works', provide readers with a foundation of knowledge so they can get the most out of subsequent chapters. The author presents the 'Use It or Lose It' theory of memory and aging and the overwhelming evidence that cognitive stimulation is associated with better memory ability; he also provides information on how nutrition, physical exercise, mood, stress, and sleep all affect memory. The book contains cognitive enhancement activities, with instructions, that can be used to create a memory enhancement program for oneself or others. However, even all of this information won't help the older adult who is unmotivated to make the necessary behavioral changes, so the author includes information on how to motivate people to do the things that can improve their quality of life and their ability to make new memories.
