Book Description
Excerpt from Piles and Pile-Driving The following work contains a reprint of some of the more important articles on the subject of "Bearing Piles," which have appeared from time to time in Engineering News, including especially those in which what has since become known as the "Engineering News Formula" for the safe load of piles was announced, explained and defended. It also includes a reprint of a valuable pamphlet on "Bearing Piles," by Rudolph Hering, M. Am. Soc. C. E., which was published some years ago by the Engineering News Publishing Co., but long since went out of print; and a full abstract of a paper by Mr. Foster Crowell before the American Society of Civil Engineers on "Uniform Practice in Pile Driving" with the discussions thereon. It is believed that this little volume contains about all that can be required in any case for solving the most serious problem connected with pile-driving, what load can be placed on given piles with safety; but if it be desired to find fuller information as to specific records, the back files of Engineering News, of the Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers and of the Proceedings, of the Institution of Civil Engineers should be consulted, as they all contain further information of value; though the more important information to be had from all these sources is given in substance in this volume. Book Description
Excerpt from Circular of the Office of the Chief of Engineers, November 28, 1881: Pile Foundations and Pile-Driving Formulae The site of the' tower at Proctorsville, as determined by actual borings, was found to have the following character, viz.: For a depth of 'nine feet there was mud mixed with sand, then followed a layer of sand about five feet thick, then a layer of sand mixed with clay from four to six feet thick, and then followed fine clay. Sometimes clay was met in small quantities at the depth of six feet, as well as small layers of shells. By draining the site the surface was lowered about six inches. The foundation piles were driven in a square of twenty piles on a side, four feet from centre to centre. Twenty-four were omitted to leave room for fresh water cisterns, and two extra ones were driven to strengthen supposed weak ones. The total num ber at first driven was therefore 378. The piles were driven to distances varying from 30 to 35 feet below the surface, or from 10 to 15 feet into the clay stratum. The average number of blows to a pile was 55, and mainly hard driving. After all these piles were driven, ten additional ones were driven at different points to strengthen supposed weak points. Each one of them required over 100 blows to drive it. Before beginning the foundation I drove an experimental pile exactly in the centre of the site. It was 30 feet long, 12%x12at top and 11%xii at butt. It was sharpened to a bottom surface about 4 inches square. Its head was capped with a round iron ring. Its weight was pounds and the weight of the hammer was 910 pounds. Its own weight sank it 5' and it required 64 blows to drive it 29' 6 deeper. The fall of the hammer at the first blow was 6 feet, increasing each successive blow by the amount of penetration, excepting the last ten blows when the fall was regulated to exactly 5 feet at each blow. Foundations of Bridges and Buildings (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Henry S. Jacoby

Book Description
Excerpt from Foundations of Bridges and Buildings In preparing this volume the aim of the authors has been to treat in a systematic manner the entire subject of foundations for bridges and buildings as represented by American engineering practice. Only occasional references are made to foreign practice. It was hoped, at first, to accomplish this task within the limits of about 300 pages, but as the work progressed it became evident that this could not be done without abbreviating the treatment of many topics so much as to become unsatisfactory. In many cases, space has been economized by inserting additional illustrations and reducing descriptions in the text. A large proportion of space is devoted to piles and pile driving, since young engineers are more likely to obtain their early experience with pile foundations than with any other class of foundation construction. Many facts derived from experience are given to emphasize and illustrate the application of fundamental principles and to form a rational basis for that kind of judgment which is such an important element in an engineers professional practice. The undesirable features of considerable pile driving in this country have been due as much to the assumption that the art of pile driving is so simple that the aid of science is not essential, as to the attempt of some engineers to base the art upon theoretical rules which fail to take into account many practical factors of the problem. Another reason for extending the treatment is due to the recent introduction of concrete piles which will help to retain the dominant place that pile foundations have held heretofore among other classes of foundations. The attention of engineering teachers is called to the arrangement of the topics in the first five chapters.
