Observational Studies of Photonuclear Reactions Triggered by Lightning Discharges

Observational Studies of Photonuclear Reactions Triggered by Lightning Discharges PDF Author: Yuuki Wada

Book Description
This book presents the first simultaneous detection of neutrons and positrons after a terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), a highest-energy transient phenomenon on the earth, triggered by a lightning discharge, based on innovative ground-based observations made in the Hokuriku area of Japan. TGFs, known to be produced by lightning discharges since the 1990s, has been theoretically predicted to react with atmospheric nuclei via photonuclear reactions because they comprise high-energy photons of more than 10 MeV, but such photonuclear reactions by lightning discharges, which produce neutrons and unstable isotopes emitting positrons, were not observationally confirmed. The reactions and propagations of their products in the atmosphere are modeled with Monte Carlo simulations to quantitatively evaluate observations of TGFs, neutrons, and positrons at ground level. The successful comparison between observation and simulation is presented, and demonstrates that lightning discharges to trigger photonuclear reactions and to even produce isotopes in the atmosphere.

Book Description
This collection of articles contains a systematic outline of original experimental and theoretical research on photoproduction of neutral pions at protons and at a strongly bound system of a few nucleons, i.e., the helium nucleus. Spark chambers and their use as spectrometers for photons and electrons are described in detail. The articles of the collection include information on a novel method of determining the efficiency of recording apparatus by generating monochromatic photons. The articles de scribe original theoretical research on the optical anisotropy of nuclei. Problems encountered in experimental studies of operating the synchrotron as a storage-type accelerator of electrons and positrons receive particular attention. The results of this research work are listed, and the problems of oppositely directed electron-positron beams in the 250-MeV synchrotron are considered. The articles should be of interest to physicists, including research workers, teachers, engineers, graduate students, and students in advanced undergraduate courses. v CONTENTS Photoproduction of Neutral Pions at Nucleons and Nuclei B.B. Book Description
Excerpt from Photonuclear Reaction Data, 1973 A brief summary is given of the available data on the gross features of the photonuclear giant resonance. Data are presented in tabular form for all nuclei where measurements have been made. In addition, a comprehensive, annotated data index and bibliography are given which cover experimental data for the field of photonuclear reactions published in scientific and technical journals in the period from 1955 through 1972. Organized by element and isotope, each entry in the index is for a specific reaction reported in a given reference. Information is given on the type of measurement, excitation energies studied, source type and energies, detector type and angular ranges covered for each reaction entry. Key words: Bibliography; data index; data summary; elements; isotopes; nuclear physics; photonuclear giant resonance; photonuclear reaction.
