Stillness in Motion

Stillness in Motion PDF Author: Sarah Patricia Hill
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 144264933X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 395

Book Description
Stillness in Motion brings together the writing of scholars, theorists, and artists on the uneasy relationship between Italian culture and photography. Highlighting the depth and complexity of the Italian contribution to the technology and practice of photography, this collection offers essays, interviews, and theoretical reflections at the intersection of comparative, visual, and cultural studies. Its chapters, illustrated with more than 130 black and white images and an eight-page colour section, explore how Italian literature, cinema, popular culture, and politics have engaged with the medium of photography over the course of time. The collection includes topics such as Futurism's ambivalent relationship to photography, the influence of American photography on Italian neorealist cinema, and the connection between the photograph and Duchamp's concept of the Readymade. With contributions from writer and theorist Umberto Eco, photographer Franco Vaccari, art historian Robert Valtorta, and cultural historian Robert Lumley, Stillness in Motion engages with crucial historical and cultural moments in Italian history, examining each one through particular photographic practices.

The Stranger, the Tears, the Photograph, the Touch

The Stranger, the Tears, the Photograph, the Touch PDF Author: William A. Christian Jr.
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 6155225419
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina GarcĂa Rodero, are included.

Images of War and War of Images

Images of War and War of Images PDF Author: Karine Hildenbrand
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 144380827X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Contributors to this volume address the issue of the representation of warfare, in an attempt to assess the veracity or mendacity of war images and their probable impact upon the sequence of events. War images may trigger unfathomable horror or conversely and paradoxically attain sublimity. The margin is sometimes narrow between ethics and aesthetics, let alone the almost irrepressible shift from information to propaganda.

The Great War Through Picture Postcards

The Great War Through Picture Postcards PDF Author: Guus de Vries
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1473856698
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 796

Book Description
During World War I, the picture postcard was the most important means of communication for the soldiers in the field and their loved ones at home, with an estimated 30 billion of them sent between 1914 and 1918. A Postcard from home offered the soldier in the trenches a short escape from their daily hell, while receiving a postcard from the man on the front-line was literally a sign of life. These postcards create a vivid record of life at home and abroad during the Great War, both from the messages they carries and the pictures on the cards themselves. The dipiction of war on the contemporary postcards is extremely diverse: The ways in which the postcards depict the war differs greatly; from simple enthusiasm, patriotism and propaganda to humour, satire and bitter hatred. Other portray the wishes and dreams (nostalgia, homesickness and pin-ups) of the soldiers, the technological developments of the armies, not to mention the daily life and death on the battlefield, including the horrific reality of piles of bodied and mass-graves Altogether, this extraordinarily vivid contemporary record of the Great War offers a unique and details insight on the minds and mentality of the soldiers and their families who lived and died in the war to end all wars.
