Book Description
This guidance covers the practical application of photogrammetry in recording cultural heritage, with particular reference to structure from motion (SfM) techniques. Our audience for this document includes survey contractors, archaeological contractors, voluntary organisations and specialists. Photogrammetric image acquisition and processing, until recently requiring a considerable investment in hardware and software, are now possible at a fraction of their former cost. This has led to a huge increase in the use of photogrammetry in cultural heritage recording. The skills required to apply the techniques successfully and accurately are discussed, and background information on how various parts of the process work is provided so that better results can be achieved through better understanding. Photogrammetry is characterised by its versatility, and is applicable over a wide range of scales, from landscapes to small objects. The particular requirements needed at these different scales are outlined, and both imaging techniques and useful ancillary equipment are described. The different types of outputs are discussed, including their suitability for further interrogation using a range of established analytical techniques and the presentation options available. A range of case studies illustrates the application of photogrammetry across a variety of projects that broadly reflect the areas discussed in the text. This document is one of a number of Historic England technical advice documents on how to survey historic places.

Recording, Modeling and Visualization of Cultural Heritage

Recording, Modeling and Visualization of Cultural Heritage PDF Author: Manos Baltsavias
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780415392082
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
This book deals with the recording, modelling and visualization of cultural heritage (anthropogenic objects and natural scenes) and related processes. The areas discussed include data acquisition, using a variety of sensors (mainly optical sensors and laser scanners); platforms and mobile systems; data management and Spatial Information Systems; 3D modeling; and reconstruction, visualization and animation; Virtual and Augmented Reality, including innovative software and hardware systems; applications and interdisciplinary projects. A central focus is the development of methods for automated data processing. The aim of the workshop was to survey recent developments, trends, and new approaches and to bring together the various heterogeneous groups active in cultural heritage (sponsors, archaeologists and architects, scientists in remote sensing, photogrammetry, computer vision and computer graphics etc.). The involvement of these groups, representing both producers and users of information, allowed a cross-fertilisation and a multidisciplinary treatment of the workshop topics. This book offers a comprehensive selection of high-quality contributions from leading international research institutions and other organisations active in cultural heritage, treating theoretical issues as well as projects and applications and representing the cutting edge of this key subject as presented at the workshop organised by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich at Monte Verità, Ascona, Switzerland on 22-27 May 2005.

Photogrammetric Computer Vision

Photogrammetric Computer Vision PDF Author: Wolfgang Förstner
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319115502
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 819

Book Description
This textbook offers a statistical view on the geometry of multiple view analysis, required for camera calibration and orientation and for geometric scene reconstruction based on geometric image features. The authors have backgrounds in geodesy and also long experience with development and research in computer vision, and this is the first book to present a joint approach from the converging fields of photogrammetry and computer vision. Part I of the book provides an introduction to estimation theory, covering aspects such as Bayesian estimation, variance components, and sequential estimation, with a focus on the statistically sound diagnostics of estimation results essential in vision metrology. Part II provides tools for 2D and 3D geometric reasoning using projective geometry. This includes oriented projective geometry and tools for statistically optimal estimation and test of geometric entities and transformations and their relations, tools that are useful also in the context of uncertain reasoning in point clouds. Part III is devoted to modelling the geometry of single and multiple cameras, addressing calibration and orientation, including statistical evaluation and reconstruction of corresponding scene features and surfaces based on geometric image features. The authors provide algorithms for various geometric computation problems in vision metrology, together with mathematical justifications and statistical analysis, thus enabling thorough evaluations. The chapters are self-contained with numerous figures and exercises, and they are supported by an appendix that explains the basic mathematical notation and a detailed index. The book can serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate courses in photogrammetry, computer vision, and computer graphics. It is also appropriate for researchers, engineers, and software developers in the photogrammetry and GIS industries, particularly those engaged with statistically based geometric computer vision methods.

Photogrammetry for Archaeological Objects

Photogrammetry for Archaeological Objects PDF Author: Madeline G.P. Robinson
Publisher: Sydney University Press
ISBN: 1743329857
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Photogrammetry is the process of obtaining digital three-dimensional models of objects, features, or landscapes from a series of overlapping, focused, and well-exposed two-dimensional photographs. Photogrammetry is becoming standard practice for archaeological analysis, especially since a digital camera now features consistently in an archaeologist’s tool kit. An archaeological career, however, does not traditionally involve becoming an expert in photography. Photogrammetry for Archaeological Objects: A Manual explains in simple, easy-to-follow steps all the essential elements of photography, how to design a controlled photography setup, how to shoot in an uncontrolled environment, and how to edit your images so you can develop your proficiency in photography and by extension, photogrammetry. This guide will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the process of setting up your camera for photogrammetry shooting, the necessary camera positions required to completely capture your artefacts, and how to use these images captured to process and edit your photogrammetry models. With the aid of 11 different case studies of a variety of archaeological objects, you can develop your understanding of how to approach different archaeological material for modelling purposes; what camera gear and shooting environment is the most suitable, and what camera angles are suitable to correctly capture your object. Photogrammetry for Archaeological Objects is your go-to guide for building successful and usable 3D photogrammetry models of archaeological material that can be used for analysis, conservation, and educational purposes.

Data Acquisition and Processing in Cultural Heritage

Data Acquisition and Processing in Cultural Heritage PDF Author: Gabriele Bitelli
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039217402
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
Advances in the knowledge of the tangible components (position, size, shape) and intangible components (identity, habits) of an historic building or site involves fundamental and complex tasks in any project related to the conservation of cultural heritage (CH). In recent years, new geotechnologies have proven their usefulness and added value to the field of cultural heritage (CH) in the tasks of recording, modeling, conserving, and visualizing. In addition, current developments in building information modeling (HBIM), allow integration and simulation of different sources of information, generating a digital twin of any complex CH construction. As a result, experts in the area have increased the number of available sensors and methodologies. However, the quick evolution of geospatial technologies makes it necessary to revise their use, integration, and application in CH. This process is difficult to adopt, due to the new options which are opened for the study, analysis, management, and valorization of CH. Therefore, the aim of the present Special Issue is to cover the latest relevant topics, trends, and best practices in geospatial technologies and processing methodologies for CH sites and scenarios as well as to introduce the new tendencies. This book originates from the Special Issue “Data Acquisition and Processing in Cultural Heritage”, focusing primarily on data and sensor integration for CH; documentation/restoration in CH; heritage 3D documentation and modeling of complex CH sites; drone inspections in CH; software development in CH; and augmented reality in CH. It is hoped that this book will provide the advice and guidance required for any CH professional, making the best possible use of these sensors and methods in CH.
