Multiphoton lonization of Atoms

Multiphoton lonization of Atoms PDF Author: S.L. Chin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323157556
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
Multiphoton lonization of Atoms provides a pedagogical review of the whole subfield of multiphoton ionization of atoms. This book discusses the "normal multiphoton ionization of atoms; calculation of resonant multiphoton processes; and angular distribution of photoelectrons and light polarization effects in multiphoton ionization of atoms. The multiphoton ionization involving continuum-continuum transitions; creation of doubly charged strontium ions; and many-electron processes in nonlinear ionization of atoms are also elaborated. Other topics include the non-resonant multiphoton ionization of atoms; above-threshold ionization theory; autoionizing states in multiphoton transitions; and specific features of the spectra of alkaline-earth atoms. This publication is beneficial to physics students and researchers conducting work on the multiple ionization of atoms.

High-Resolution Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Multiphoton Processes in Atoms and Molecules

Book Description
This report summarizes research on resonantly enhanced multiphoton absorption dissociation, and ionization processes in atoms and molecules. Multiphoton processes are studied using from one to three independently tunable visible and/or UV laser beams in order to establish both the underlying physics and the high degree of selectivity of multiphoton processes. Measurements are made to probe both the formation of excited molecular states and the subsequent behavior of excited states either in the presence or in the abscence of further intense laser radiation. Detection methods include laser-induced fluorescence, ion mass analysis, and electron energy analysis. During the current reporting period, we have studied resonant multiphoton ionization processes for the molecules N2, CO, O2, NO, NeXe, ArXe, KrXe, and Xe2 and for the atoms C, I, and S using both mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy to analyze the products of the ionizations. In addition, we are developing three new instruments that will provide significantly enhanced resolution, collection efficiency, and versatility in both the ion mass and the electron kinetic energy detection channels. Keywords include: double resonance spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy, molecular beams, rydberg states; photoelectron angular, distributions. (Author).

Book Description
The chapters of this volume represent the invited papers delivered at the 3rd International Conference on Multiphoton Processes (ICOMP III) held in Iraklion, Crete, Greece, September 5-11, 1984. The invited papers at a conference like ICOMP cannot possibly cover the whole field which has grown to immense proportions in recent years, overlapping with such diverse areas as atomic and molecular spectroscopy, plasma physics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, etc. We believe these contributions represent that part of the research activity which has been attracting the most interest in the past year or so, as well as reviews of some of the more established topics. Even within this scope, and given the confines imposed by the fi nite duration of a conference, important and timely topics are inevitably left out. But then, there will be ICOMP IV. The collection of articles in this volume, combined with extensive ref erences to related work given by the authors, should provide an introduc tion to the major problems of the field and its state of the art. The chapters have been arranged according to thematic proximity, beginning with atoms, and continuing on with molecules and surfaces. This classi fication, however, would not cover all the subject matter even within the limited scope of the conference and of this volume.

Book Description
The objective of the research under this contract is to carry out studies of resonant enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) processes in molecules. In the (n+1)-REMPI process of interest an atom or molecule in a specific initial state absorbs n photons making a transition to an intermediate state from which it is subsequently ionized by absorption of an additional photon. The studies are designed to provide a quantitatively robust analysis and prediction of key spectral features in several ongoing experimental studies and potentially practical applications of this technique. The specific problems of interest to the authors in these studied are (1) the vibrational distributions of ions that can be expected in REMPI of small molecules and molecular fragments with particular emphasis on their non-Franck-Condon behavior. Such non-Franck-Condon behavior introduces serious complications in the use of the technique for state-specific production of ions, e.g., O2([nu]) and OH([nu]), and in the extraction of state populations from REMPI signals, (2) rotational distributions of ions that can be produced in various REMPI schemes and how these distributions can be tuned by choice of the resonant state and influenced by the molecular character of the photoelectron, and (3) the circular dichroism in photoelectron angular distributions, i.e., the difference in photoelectron angular distributions produced by right- and left-circularly polarized, and their use as a probe of molecular alignment. Here the author will summarize the progress that has been made to date in the studies of these features and applications of REMPI of molecules and molecular fragments. A significant feature of these studies, which will be explicitly assumed throughout the discussion below, is that they are carried out using quantitatively reliable molecular photoelectron orbitals.

Calculations of High-Intensity Multiphoton Ionization and Photoemission from Atoms

Calculations of High-Intensity Multiphoton Ionization and Photoemission from Atoms PDF Author: K. C. Kulander

Book Description
A method which involves the direct solution of the time dependent Schrodinger equations has been used in studies of the dynamics of excitation of and emission from atoms in intense, pulsed laser fields. A surprising array of effects have been observed during high-intensity, short-pulse laser excitation of atoms and molecules. To model the results of these measurements, we have developed methods to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for an atom in a time varying, classical electromagnetic field. Studies on may atomic and molecular systems have been performed over a range of intensities from the regime within which perturbative techniques are valid up to field strengths well above an atomic unit (I> (3.51 x 10 to the 16th W)/sq. cm.). These calculations have provided predictions for ionization rates, 1 photoelectron energy and angular distributions and photoemission rates. The effects of ac Stark shifted and intensity broadened intermediate states on the emission processes have been investigated.
