Photodegradation of Water Pollutants

Photodegradation of Water Pollutants PDF Author: Martin M. Halmann
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849324598
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
Photodegradation of Water Pollutants, the only complete survey available of current photocatalytic methods for treating water pollutants, covers all aspects of light-stimulated detoxification. Ideal for researchers and students, this new book explains methods for pollution treatment that have proven more effective than conventional biodegradation. Photodegradation of Water Pollutants examines advanced oxidation processes that have been successful in treating the chemical substances produced by industrial effluents and intensive agriculture. These oxidation processes include irradiation with ultraviolet or visible light, the use of homogenous sensitizers, such as dyes, and the use of heterogeneous photocatalysts, such as dispersed semiconductors. In addition, Photodegradation of Water Pollutants addresses the naturally occurring self-cleaning of some pollutants in sunlit surface waters, as well as several alternative non-photochemical approaches to water treatment. Available treatment options are discussed for the main groups of water pollutants, including toxic inorganic ions (cyanides, heavy metals), hydrocarbon derivatives (oil spills, surfactants, pulp and paper wastes), halocarbons, organo-N, organo-P, and organo-S compounds. The text also contains a unique section on the economics of advanced oxidation pollution treatments.

Nanostructured Titanium Dioxide Materials

Nanostructured Titanium Dioxide Materials PDF Author: Ali Reza Khataee
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814374725
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
During the past decade, research and development in the area of synthesis and applications of different nanostructured titanium dioxide have become tremendous. This book briefly describes properties, production, modification and applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide focusing in particular on photocatalytic activity. The physicochemical properties of nanostructured titanium dioxide are highlighted and the links between properties and applications are emphasized. The preparation of TiO2 nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanorods, nanowires, nanosheets, nanofibers, and nanotubes are primarily categorized by their preparation method (sol-gel and hydrothermal processes). Examples of early applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide in dye-sensitized solar cells, hydrogen production and storage, sensors, rechargeable batteries, electrocatalysis, self-cleaning and antibacterial surfaces and photocatalytic cancer treatment are reviewed. The review of modifications of TiO2 nanomaterials is mainly focused on the research related to the modifications of the optical properties of TiO2 nanomaterials, since many applications of TiO2 nanomaterials are closely related to their optical properties. Photocatalytic removal of various pollutants using pure TiO2 nanomaterials, TiO2-based nanoclays and non-metal doped nanostructured TiO2 are also discussed.

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

Heterogeneous Photocatalysis PDF Author: M. Schiavello
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Photocatalysis is a reaction which is accelerated by light while a heterogeneous reaction consists of two phases ( a solid and a liquid for example). Heterogeneous Photocatalysis is a fast developing science which to date has not been fully detailed in a monograph. This title discusses the basic principles of heterogeneous photocatalysis and describes the bulk and surface properties of semiconductors. Applications of various types of photoreactions are described and the problems related to the modeling and design of photoreactors are covered.

Trends and Contemporary Technologies for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

Trends and Contemporary Technologies for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes PDF Author: Sushma Dave
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303108991X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
This book looks at the recent developments in the area of photocatalytic degradation of dyes using photocatalytic techniques, for example by means of various nanoparticles, heterogeneous, and hybrid systems. Dyes are one of the major groups of water pollutants and are widely used in a diverse range of industries. The toxic effects of organic dyes in wastewater can have a great environmental impact, therefore there is significant interest and need to remove these dyes effectively and efficiently during wastewater treatment. This volume covers a plethora of basics on the photochemistry of dyes and provides information on technological perspectives including reactor designs and process intensification. Since many industries release a significant amount of colored effluents, which are toxic and difficult to remove by conventional methods, the comprehensive studies herein will contribute to helping reduce the impact of colored effluents in wastewater on the environment.

Book Description
Organic pollution of our natural resources is detrimental to the environment as well as humans. Treatment of wastewater containing these organics has become paramount for the world’s nations. In this study, polyaniline - titania nanocomposite (PANVTiO) material was applied in the removal reactive black 5 dye (RB-5) from wastewater. The nanocomp0SIte was characterized using the relevant techniques such as FTIR, XRD, EDS, TEM, BET and BJH analysis. In one approach, the batch adsorption mode was used to study the batch equilibrium and kinetics of reactive dyes adsorption. In the batch sorption study, the effects of pH adsorbent mass, initial concentration, temperature and contact time were examined. As a result, RB-5 dye adsorption was favoured at low pH values and increased with increasing temperature and adsorbent mass. The experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and kinetic data fited well to the pseudo second order model. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 114.9, 123.5 and 142.9 mg/g at 298 K, 308 K and 318 K, respectively. The polyaniline TiO2 nanocomposites adsorption capacity was compared to the maximum adsorption capacity of the pristine TiO; nanoparticles. Results indicate that there is a significant improvement in the adsorption of RB-5 dye for PANITiO2 nanocomposite as compared to pristine TiO: nanoparticles. Furthermore, photocatalysis mode was used in the photodegradation and photomineralization of the RB-5 dye. In the photocatalysis mode, the existing ions were tested. effects of pH, catalyst loading, recirculation rate and co - experimental data revealed that RB-5 dye degradation was rapid at lower pH range. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency decreased with increasing dye concentration and increased with increasing recirculation rate and catalyst loading. It was observed that. In comparison with single component system (RB-5 dye only), the presence of competing ions reduced the photodegradation of RB-5 dye suggesting that the desired ion was suppressed by existing ions. The UV-Vis spectrum indicated that rapid the presence of the co decolourization was achieved and the chromophore (azo bond) was broken down. Moreover, there was significant degradation of the aromatic rings of the RB-S dye molecule. The photodegradation of RB-5 dye into its intermediates was found to be over 99 %. However, photomineralization of RB-5 dye into innocuous substances was found to be over 65 %
