Book Description
Phosphorus Chemistry Directed Towards Biology presents an understanding of reaction mechanisms of organophosphorus compounds. This book discusses the development of analytical tools for the study of the chemistry of phosphorus, which promoted research in nucleic acid chemistry. Organized into 22 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the importance of the bacterial cell wall in maintaining the integrity of the cell in various environments. This text then examines the chemical problems concerning hypermodification and deprotection steps. Other chapters consider the reactive phosphorylating intermediates used in the oligonucleotide chemistry. This book discusses as well the possible role of phosphodiester triazolides and tetrazolides in the phosphotriester formation with arenesulfonyltriazolides and tetrazolides. The final chapter deals with the isolation of proteins involved in the synthesis and recognition of mRNA caps. This book is a valuable resource for phosphorus chemists, biologists, scientists, research workers, teachers, and students.

The Chemical Biology of Phosphorus

The Chemical Biology of Phosphorus PDF Author: Christopher T Walsh
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1839162325
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 567

Book Description
Alexander Todd, the 1957 Nobel laureate in chemistry is credited with the statement: “where there is life, there is phosphorus”. Phosphorus chemical biology underlies most of life’s reactions and processes, from the covalent bonds that hold RNA and DNA together, to the making and spending 75 kg of ATP every day, required to run almost all metabolic and mechanical events in cells. Authored by a renowned biochemist, The Chemical Biology of Phosphorus provides an in-depth, unifying chemical approach to the logic and reactivity of inorganic phosphate and its three major derivatives (anhydrides, mono- and diesters) throughout biology to examine why life depends on phosphorus. Covering the breadth of phosphorus chemistry in biology, this book is ideal for biochemistry students, postgraduates and researchers interested in the chemical logic of phosphate metabolites, energy generation, biopolymer accumulation and phosphoproteomics.

Organophosphorus Chemistry

Organophosphorus Chemistry PDF Author: D W Hutchinson
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1847554326
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Organophosphorus Chemistry provides a comprehensive annual review of the literature. Coverage includes phosphines and their chalcogenides, phosphonium salts, low coordination number phosphorus compounds, penta- and hexa-coordinated compounds, tervalent phosphorus acids, nucleotides and nucleic acids, ylides and related compounds, and phosphazenes. The series will be of value to research workers in universities, government and industrial research organisations, whose work involves the use of organophosphorus compounds. It provides a concise but comprehensive survey of a vast field of study with a wide variety of applications, enabling the reader to rapidly keep abreast of the latest developments in their specialist areas. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Advanced Organic Chemistry of Nucleic Acids

Advanced Organic Chemistry of Nucleic Acids PDF Author: Zoe A. Shabarova
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 352761592X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 603

Book Description
Sequencing, cloning, transcription - these are but a few key techniques behind the current breathtaking advances in molecular biology and biochemistry. As these methods continuosly diversify, biochemists need a sound chemical understanding to keep the pace. Chemists beginning working in the molecular biology lab need an introduction to this field from their point of view. This book serves both: it describes most of the known chemical reactions of nucleosides, nucleotides, and nucleic acids in sufficient detail to provide the desired background, and additionally, the fundamental relations between sequence, structure and functionality of nucleic acids are presented. The first edition of this book, which was published in Russian, has immediately become a recognized standard reference. This second, thoroughly revised and updated edition, now published in English, is likely to achieve a similar position in the international scientific community.

NMR: Principles and Applications to Biomedical Research

NMR: Principles and Applications to Biomedical Research PDF Author: Jay W. Pettegrew
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461233003
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 636

Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is having an enormous liTIpact on biomedical research both at the basic science and clinical levels. In order to appreciate the elegance and power of this technology a historical perspective is in order. In 1924 Pauli suggested that hydrogen nuclei might possess a magnetic IIlOlllent. This was in fact confinned by Rabbi in 1939 who demonstrated that a beam of hydrogen molecules in the presence of a magnetic field could be mutated by radio frequency fields resonating at the Iarmor frequency. 'Ihe first successful NMR experiments in condensed matter were independently conducted in late 1945 by Purcell, Torrey and PoUnd and by Bloch, Hansen and Packard. 'Ihe Purcell group detected proton NMR in solid paraffin and the Bloch group detected proton in liquid water. Bloch and Purcell received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1952 for these observations . Until about 1952, studies of liquids and solids with broad resonance lines dominated the field of NMR. However, the reports of 3 1 P NMR chemical shifts in several corrpounds in 1949 by Khight, of 14 N resonances in several ions by Proctor and Yu in 1950, and of 1 9 F resonances in several corrpounds in 1950 by Dickinson led to the development of high resolution NMR in Itquids. since the molecular motions in liquids result in very narrow lines compared to those in solids, :much smaller chemical shifts could be detected.
