The methodology of data collection, storage, retrieval, presentation, and analysis is described. Data are presented descriptively by individual chapters for each of five age groups: 18, 24, 36, 48, and 72 months. Summary data are presented, using both descriptive and inferential statistics across the entire sample. One hundred children, 20 at each age group, served as subjects. All language samples were collected in spontaneous situations. A total of 86,661 phonemes was entered for analysis. Two distinctive feature systems--the Irwin-Wong and the Chomsky-Halle--were employed in all analyses. Data for both phonemes and distinctive features were presented in terms of distribution, acceptability of production, and nature of any replacement.

A theory of the acquisition of phonology is derived from a detailed and rigorous analysis of the developing speech of a young child observed over a period of two years. The final chapter is devoted to the implications of language acquisition for linguistic theory in general and generative phonology in particular. Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss.
