Corpus of the Aramaic Incantation Bowls

Corpus of the Aramaic Incantation Bowls PDF Author: Charles David Isbell
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1606081063
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Since the 1913 publication of James A. Montgomery's Aramaic Incantation Texts from Nippur, students of the bowls have used that book as the diving platform from which they enter a deep pool of study, In the intervening years, the body of work on incantation (or magic) bowls has continued to grow. Bowls in several ancient languages have attracted the attention of scholars from a variety of countries and traditions. The result has been the publication of a considerable number of translations of additional texts and fragments. Focusing only on those bowls inscribed in Aramaic and even then, only on the seventy-two extant bowls which could be personally read in photographs or facsimiles, Charles Isbell has, in Corpus of the Aramaic Incantation Bowls, compiled an impressive volume of work. Including the complete original texts, full translations, and annotations, Isbell supplements the text with a glossary of all inscribed words, an index of personal names, and a list of quotations from scripture.

Puritanism: A Very Short Introduction

Puritanism: A Very Short Introduction PDF Author: Francis J. Bremer
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199740879
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
Written by a leading expert on the Puritans, this brief, informative volume offers a wealth of background on this key religious movement. This book traces the shaping, triumph, and decline of the Puritan world, while also examining the role of religion in the shaping of American society and the role of the Puritan legacy in American history. Francis J. Bremer discusses the rise of Puritanism in the English Reformation, the struggle of the reformers to purge what they viewed as the corruptions of Roman Catholicism from the Elizabethan church, and the struggle with the Stuart monarchs that led to a brief Puritan triumph under Oliver Cromwell. It also examines the effort of Puritans who left England to establish a godly kingdom in America. Bremer examines puritan theology, views on family and community, their beliefs about the proper relationship between religion and public life, the limits of toleration, the balance between individual rights and one's obligation to others, and the extent to which public character should be shaped by private religious belief. About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

Buddhist Cosmology

Buddhist Cosmology PDF Author: W. Randolph Kloetzli
Publisher:
ISBN: 9788120804630
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 218

Book Description
Disagreements concerning the nature and extent of the universe constitute a focus of theological debate which permeates buddhism at every level. While there have been numerous attempts to catalogue the details of the Buddhist cosmologies, none has attempted a general interpretation of their underlying intention. This work attempts to begin the process of interpreting the major phases of Buddhist Cosmological speculation by seeing in them various dramas of salvation tailored to the philosophical and theological predilections of their respective traditions. To a large extent, this interpretation relies on an examination of continuities between the Buddhist cosmologies and those of the hellenistic world as a whole. In the course of this study, two major cosmological traditions emerge; those which rely on metaphors of time and those which rely on metaphors of time and those which rely on metaphors of space. The former are associated with the Hinayana and the latter with the Mahayana forms of Buddhism. Each draws on images of motion and light to articulate its vision of the drama of salvation.

Mystical Union in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

Mystical Union in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam PDF Author: Moshe Idel
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1474281184
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Mystics who have spoken of their union with God have come under suspicion in all three major religious traditions, sometimes to the point of condemnation and execution in the case of Christianity and Islam. Nevertheless, in all three religions the tradition of unio mystica is deep and long. Many of the spiritual giants of these three faiths have seen the attainment of mystical union as the heart of their beliefs and practices. Despite its importance, mystical union has rarely been investigated in itself, apart from the wider study of mysticism, and even more rarely from the aspect of comparative studies, especially those based upon broad and expert knowledge of the inner life of the three related monotheistic faiths. This text brings together essays that equally explore the broader idea of unio mystica as well as the mystic traditions within each religion.
