Richard Foote (b.1632) came from England to Westmoreland County, Virginia, returned to England on several business trips, married Hester Howard in 1657 and remained in England. His son, Richard Foote II (1665-1725), immigrated in 1688 to land in Stafford and King George Counties, Virginia. The name "Chotank" was given to the area, and people from there were known as "Chotankers." Descendants lived in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and elsewhere.
