Phase II Testing of the Shell Lake Site, 23WE627, Near Wappapello Dam, Wayne County, Missouri, 1984
Author: James E. Price
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Archaeological surveying
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
Archaeological investigations were conducted in November, 1983 near the Wappapello Lake dam, Wayne County, Missouri, as a Phase II testing program to assess the National Register of Historic Places status of the site in the direct impact zone of a proposed waste water treatment facility. The project is being funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer, St. Louis District. The project area is located in the St. Francis River embayment on the Ozark Escarpment in the St. Francis River principal drainage basin and the Lower Mississippi major drainage basin. Controlled surface collecting, and machine and hand testing generated data on the artifactual content and surface and subsurface nature of the archaeological deposits. Data generated by the fieldwork revealed that the Shell Lake site is relatively undisturbed and its major component is part of the Varney Tradition, an Emergent Mississippian manifestation that was present in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and the Eastern Ozarks ca. A.D. 650-1000. The assemblage from the Shell Lake site is compared with those from other Varney Tradition sites throughout the region. It is concluded that the site has a high degree of archaeological integrity and an extremely high potential for producing additional data.
