Notes on Introductory Combinatorics

Notes on Introductory Combinatorics PDF Author: George Polya
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475711018
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
In the winter of 1978, Professor George P61ya and I jointly taught Stanford University's introductory combinatorics course. This was a great opportunity for me, as I had known of Professor P61ya since having read his classic book, How to Solve It, as a teenager. Working with P6lya, who ·was over ninety years old at the time, was every bit as rewarding as I had hoped it would be. His creativity, intelligence, warmth and generosity of spirit, and wonderful gift for teaching continue to be an inspiration to me. Combinatorics is one of the branches of mathematics that play a crucial role in computer sCience, since digital computers manipulate discrete, finite objects. Combinatorics impinges on computing in two ways. First, the properties of graphs and other combinatorial objects lead directly to algorithms for solving graph-theoretic problems, which have widespread application in non-numerical as well as in numerical computing. Second, combinatorial methods provide many analytical tools that can be used for determining the worst-case and expected performance of computer algorithms. A knowledge of combinatorics will serve the computer scientist well. Combinatorics can be classified into three types: enumerative, eXistential, and constructive. Enumerative combinatorics deals with the counting of combinatorial objects. Existential combinatorics studies the existence or nonexistence of combinatorial configurations.

Handbook of Graph Theory, Combinatorial Optimization, and Algorithms

Handbook of Graph Theory, Combinatorial Optimization, and Algorithms PDF Author: Krishnaiyan "KT" Thulasiraman
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420011073
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 1217

Book Description
The fusion between graph theory and combinatorial optimization has led to theoretically profound and practically useful algorithms, yet there is no book that currently covers both areas together. Handbook of Graph Theory, Combinatorial Optimization, and Algorithms is the first to present a unified, comprehensive treatment of both graph theory and c

Fundamentals of Graph Theory

Fundamentals of Graph Theory PDF Author: Allan Bickle
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470453428
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Graph theory is a fascinating and inviting branch of mathematics. Many problems are easy to state and have natural visual representations, inviting exploration by new students and professional mathematicians. The goal of this textbook is to present the fundamentals of graph theory to a wide range of readers. The book contains many significant recent results in graph theory, presented using up-to-date notation. The author included the shortest, most elegant, most intuitive proofs for modern and classic results while frequently presenting them in new ways. Major topics are introduced with practical applications that motivate their development, and which are illustrated with examples that show how to apply major theorems in practice. This includes the process of finding a brute force solution (case-checking) when an elegant solution is not apparent. With over 1200 exercises, internet resources (e.g., the OEIS for counting problems), helpful appendices, and a detailed guide to different course outlines, this book provides a versatile and convenient tool for the needs of instructors at a large variety of institutions.

A Course in Combinatorics

A Course in Combinatorics PDF Author: J. H. van Lint
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521006019
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 620

Book Description
This is the second edition of a popular book on combinatorics, a subject dealing with ways of arranging and distributing objects, and which involves ideas from geometry, algebra and analysis. The breadth of the theory is matched by that of its applications, which include topics as diverse as codes, circuit design and algorithm complexity. It has thus become essential for workers in many scientific fields to have some familiarity with the subject. The authors have tried to be as comprehensive as possible, dealing in a unified manner with, for example, graph theory, extremal problems, designs, colorings and codes. The depth and breadth of the coverage make the book a unique guide to the whole of the subject. The book is ideal for courses on combinatorical mathematics at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. Working mathematicians and scientists will also find it a valuable introduction and reference.

Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics

Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics PDF Author: Alexander Soifer

Book Description
Geometric Etudes in Combinatorial Mathematics is not only educational, it is inspirational. This distinguished mathematician captivates the young readers, propelling them to search for solutions of life’s problems—problems that previously seemed hopeless. Review from the first edition: The etudes presented here are not simply those of Czerny, but are better compared to the etudes of Chopin, not only technically demanding and addressed to a variety of specific skills, but at the same time possessing an exceptional beauty that characterizes the best of art...Keep this book at hand as you plan your next problem solving seminar. —The American Mathematical Monthly
