This qualitative study examines the issues, concerns and perceptions of immigrant parents about the education of their children in the K-12 school system in Canada. The researcher spent six weeks interviewing immigrant parents living in St John's, Newfoundland who had children going to school in the K-12 public school system. The interview data collected was subjected to qualitative analysis and yielded a number of emergent categories and themes. The study was driven by the general research question: What are the perceptions, issues and concerns of immigrant parents about the education of their children in the K-12 school system in Newfoundland, Canada? The following were the subsidiary research questions: • How do the immigrant parents perceive the education their children are getting in K-12 in St. John's? • What support systems are made available to these parents by the schools? • What is the extent of immigrant parent involvement in schools and how can it be maintained or improved? • How can the information about views and concerns of immigrant parents be used for the betterment of the education system in Newfoundland? The study found that immigrant parents had various issues and concerns about the education system in Newfoundland. The study's findings include a discussion of immigrant parental involvement, support available to them within the school system and the suggestions given by them. The findings are valuable for other stakeholders in the education system to consider and take adequate steps to address the problems faced by these parents and their children.

This thesis employs an anthropological approach to analyzing the communication between immigrant parents and school staff at elementary schools in the west end of Halifax. I focus on the communication process in relation to children's education. Working at the intersection between migration studies, the anthropology of education, intercultural communication and anthropological political economy, I use William Roseberry's concept of "common discursive framework" (1994, 1996) to ask how the communication process for immigrant parents and the Halifax education system occurs. I pay particular attention to power relations among the institution of the school board, school staff and immigrant parents. I address how immigrant parents understand and navigate Nova Scotia's public education system and how they communicate about their children's education. The qualitative interviews with parents and school staff reveal problems with this communication. I consider the difficulties that parents and school staff face in attempting to communicate with each other and how they try to resolve those situations. I found that there are established official channels and tools for communication, but these are designed to send messages in one direction from the school to parents. Immigrant parents and teachers find solutions despite and around the system, but that depends heavily on teachers' personal sensitivity and experience.

This study focuses on the parental involvement among Eastern European immigrant parents of elementary school students in Ontario. Immigrant parents are shaped by their own educational experiences in home countries and face particular challenges to be involved in the education of their children who attend schools in the immigrant-receiving nations due to language barriers and low familiarity with the new school system. I collected my data through interviews with parents and the analysis of parental involvement documents in Ontario. The analysis was informed by the concepts of social and cultural capital developed by Pierre Bourdieu. I found that Eastern European immigrant parents see their role supporting children mainly in the home by emphasizing academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Interviewed parents grew up in countries with strict boundaries between school and family, as a result they often do not see volunteering and taking part in decision making in Ontario schools as meaningful for them. Although most parents possess high levels of cultural capital there was a variation in the amount of social capital available to immigrant parents. Those who managed to recreate rich social networks in the new country communicated with teachers more successfully and were satisfied with school. The critical analysis of policy documents showed that despite the shift towards acknowledging different types of involvement more value is still given to school-based activities, which makes the immigrant parental involvement less visible. The results of the study will enable educators and policy makers to pay more nuanced attention to the involvement among immigrant parents for better achievement and well-being of all children in Ontario classrooms.
