Book Description
A compilation of data on personal electronic devices (PEDs) attributed to having created anomalies with aircraft systems. Charts and tables display 14 years of incidents reported by pilots to the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS). Affected systems, incident severity, sources of anomaly detection, and the most frequently identified PEDs are some of the more significant data. Several reports contain incidents of aircraft off course when all systems indicated on course and of critical events that occurred during landings and takeoffs. Additionally, PEDs that should receive priority in testing are identified.Ross, Elden and Ely, Jay J. Ultrawideband Electromagnetic Interference to Aircraft Radios: Results of Limited Functional Testing with United Airlines and Eagles Wings Incorporate
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781723771361
Category : Science

Pages : 28
Book Description
On February 14, 2002, the FCC adopted a FIRST REPORT AND ORDER, released it on April 22, 2002, and on May 16, 2002 published in the Federal Register a Final Rule, permitting marketing and operation of new products incorporating UWB technology. Wireless product developers are working to rapidly bring this versatile, powerful and expectedly inexpensive technology into numerous consumer wireless devices. Past studies addressing the potential for passenger-carried portable electronic devices (PEDs) to interfere with aircraft electronic systems suggest that UWB transmitters may pose a significant threat to aircraft communication and navigation radio receivers. NASA, United Airlines and Eagles Wings Incorporated have performed preliminary testing that clearly shows the potential for handheld UWB transmitters to cause cockpit failure indications for the air traffic control radio beacon system (ATCRBS), blanking of aircraft on the traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) displays, and cause erratic motion and failure of instrument landing system (ILS) localizer and glideslope pointers on the pilot horizontal situation and attitude director displays. This report provides details of the preliminary testing and recommends further assessment of aircraft systems for susceptibility to UWB electromagnetic interference.Ely, Jay J. and Shaver, Timothy W. and Fuller, Gerald L.Langley Research CenterELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE; AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATION; COLLISION AVOIDANCE; FAILURE; RADAR BEACONS; RADIO BEACONS; AIRLINE OPERATIONS; ATTITUDE INDICATORS; CIVIL AVIATION; COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT; INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEMS; RADIO RECEIVERS; WARNING SYSTEMS

Aeronautical Public Correspondence by Satellite
Author: Tare Brisibe
Publisher: Eleven International Publishing
ISBN: 9077596100
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
This book covers the evolution of satellite based Aeronautical Public Correspondence and the operational environment in which services are being offered. Followed by an examination of applicable rules, including the relevant institutions from which they emanate, attention is devoted to the effect of State Sovereignty applicable in jurisdictions such as territorial airspace, the Arctic, Antarctica, and the High Seas as well as to activities such as telecommunications, air transport, copyright protection and trade in services. Particular attention is given to the ITU Radio Regulations; ITU Sector Recommendations; ICAO Council Resolutions; International Copyright Laws; National Operational Procedures and Statutes. A presentation of the relevant Laws and Regulations currently in force is made, while the subject of Liability is analysed against the backdrop of Case Law and legal instruments in the context of both Public and Private International Law. Looking to the future, the volume discusses the influence of Convergence and the need for more appropriate Regulations. It concludes with a 'Draft Agreement on the Use of Aircraft Earth Stations for Non-Safety Purposes'.
