Book Description
This Perquimans County Index is the second volume in a series of indexes for the loose County Estate Record Files that exist for the inhabitants who died in northeastern North Carolina before 1945. One of the most useful resources for genealogical research on a specific ancestor and their immediate family is the discovery of his or her estate papers. Unfortunately, finding the records for an ancestor is not always easy to accomplish. If a genealogical researcher does not already know where their ancestor was living before his or her death, isolating an ancestor's estate records may be challenging. The county boundaries changed several times during the early years of the Colony's or State's existence. Depending on the approximate time when a death may have occurred, genealogical researchers may need to examine the estate records for several different counties in order to find the one associated with their ancestor. The names in this index are arranged alphabetically by surname using the exact spelling recorded on the original files at the North Carolina State Archives. Also included in this volume is any additional information written on the individual estate file folders as well as a cross index for the estate files that listed multiple names.

History of Perquimans County

History of Perquimans County PDF Author: Ellen Goode Rawlings Winslow
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806379960
Category : Deeds
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
Here is a county history that is extraordinarily rich in primary source materials, including abstracts of deeds from 1681 through the Revolutionary War period and, moreover, petitions, divisions of estates, wills, and marriages found in the records of Perquimans and adjacent North Carolina counties. Numbering in the tens of thousands, the records provide the names of all principal parties and related family members, places of residence and migration, descriptions of real and personal property, dates, boundary surveys, names of executors, witnesses, and appraisers, and dates of recording. Altogether, the index contains references to about 35,000 persons! Researchers should note that Perquimans was one of the original North Carolina precincts--with very close ties to the southeastern Virginia counties of Norfolk, Princess Anne, Nansemond, and Isle of Wight--and for many years had fluid boundaries with the North Carolina counties of Chowan, Gates, and Pasquotank.

Book Description
Trudie Davis-Long continues the series of estate abstracts originally begun by Zae Hargett Gwynn for Granville County, North Carolina, which were published through Estate Docket Book 12 by Joseph W. Watson. This volume is a guide to the original documents that are housed at the Granville County Courthouse in Oxford, North Carolina, and the North Carolina State Archives. This work covers volumes thirteen through sixteen of the original docket books and includes a full name index. Volunteers checked any unusual or illegible entries in Ms. Gwynn's manuscript against the original docket books. Entries typically include the full name of the deceased, and may contain any combination of the following: name of administrator, name of executor, name of spouse, name of guardian appointed for minor children, names of children, names of witnesses, names of slaves, names of buyers at estate sales, details regarding property and its division. Property generally includes money, land, slaves, livestock, furniture, and/or household goods. Surnames are printed in bold.

This work covers volumes twenty-two (1863-1868), twenty-three (1868-1887), and twenty-four (1887-1902) of the original docket books and includes a full-name, tract, and place index. Items of questionable interpretation were checked against microfilm of the original courthouse records. There were handwritten notes on the original Gwynn manuscript, which have been included here. Obvious spelling errors were corrected and some punctuation was changed; however, all names are spelled as listed in the manuscript.
