Book Description
Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Computer Science - Technical Computer Science, grade: 70%, Griffith College Dublin (Faculty of Computing ), course: MSC Computing , language: English, abstract: Modern wireless sensor network can be expanded into large geographical areas via cheap sensor devices which can sustain themselves itself with very a low power usage. The networking capability enables these sensor nodes to incorporate, collaborates, and coordinates with among each other , and this is a fundamental shift in the field of networks which differentiates sensor network nodes form other networks such as IP-datagram, Ad-Hoc and so on. Currently, routing in the wireless sensor network faces multiple challenges, such as new scalability, coverage, packet loss, interference, real-time audio and video real time streaming, harsh weather environments, energy constraints and so forth. Network routing can be called an amalgamation of routing protocol and routing algorithm. The job of the routing protocols is to provide a cohesive view of network nodes topology while routing algorithm provides the intelligence in terms of optimal path calculation. We set out to conduct a detailed study of routing protocols in a IP-datagram, wireless ad-hoc and sensor network, and also accomplished routing protocols comparison against the chosen network performance factor dropped packet ratio. Routing protocols play an important role in modern wireless communication networks. Routing protocols’ performance can be measured by a number of factors such as packet dropped rate and so forth. Rumour and Optimal Spinal Routing algorithms are compared using ShoX simulation and the results and analysis are based upon the simulation experiments.

Comparative Analysis of Network Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

Comparative Analysis of Network Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks PDF Author: Mohammed Abdulaziz Almeer

Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
This dissertation proposes a methodology for performance evaluation and comparison of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) protocols. The methodology is simulation based and it examines the protocols lifetime, scalability, fault tolerance, and the affect of multiple sinks. Both the evaluation and the comparison consider the network lifetime (both the number of rounds before the death of the first node and the number of rounds before the death of the last node), the energy dissipation rate, and the nodes death rate. The methodology is conducted on LEACH, TEEN, APTEEN, and REE-LEACH protocols. The proposed methodology provides a better understanding of the protocols behavior. This study emphasizes on some information that helps WSN designers to take decisions. Beside which protocol lives longer, the designers should consider other details about these protocols. Such as, the death rate and energy dissipation rate should be considered for redeployment decision. Furthermore, the designers should consider the affect of enlarging the network not only on the rounds for first or last death, but also they should consider the affect on the ratio between the first and last deaths rounds. Moreover, there are other findings that help the WSN users and designers to take adopting a protocol decisions. Furthermore, the analysis conducted in this research proves and supports some of the main attributes of the protocols that are claimed in the literature. Such as, the equality of percentage between the failing nodes and the lost energy by failure, and the affect of multi-sink on the death rates prove that the protocols have a good level of load balancing. Furthermore, the changes in the death rate and energy dissipation rate mean a good level of fault tolerance. In general, the proposed methodology provides better understanding of the protocols. Furthermore, it provides abundant amount of information to determine protocol suitability for different WSN applications. Moreover, this extended analysis reveals drawbacks that should be considered in future works.

Book Description
The ability to sense and monitor a variety of environmental conditions using un-tethered sensors offers a significant change over traditional sensing systems that need to be strategically positioned and have topologies engineered. As such, recent research into wireless sensor networks has attracted great interest due to its diversity of applications, ranging in areas such as home, health, environmental and military applications. In this thesis, the evaluation of a routing protocol developed by Crossbow Technologies called XMesh, is presented. The main components of the routing protocol are described and the routing algorithm explained. Experiments were conducted to determine the connectivity ranges of motes in different transmission power settings. The relationship of mote transmission power and network connectivity is presented. An energy efficiency study looked at the means of extending the lifespan of the network. Although, packet losses during the period of a node failure were significant, the routing protocol showed that it was able to adapt and reorganize to provide reliable and stable routing in a network.

Wireless Sensor Networks. Routing Protocol Overview

Wireless Sensor Networks. Routing Protocol Overview PDF Author: Madhumathy Perumal

Book Description
Document from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, , language: English, abstract: Sensor nodes have restricted storage, computational and energy resources, these restrictions place a limit on the types of deployable routing mechanisms. Routing protocol disseminates information that enables the sensor nodes to select routes to communicate with other nodes on the network and the choice of the route is determined by the routing algorithms. Thus the routing protocol helps the nodes to gain knowledge about the topology of the network to which it is attached directly. There are mainly two types of routing processes: one is static routing and the other is dynamic routing. In a static routing, the routing tables are set up in a static manner in the nodes. The network routes for the packet are initially set between the nodes. However, if any node on the specified route fails, the data may not reach the destination. In a dynamic routing, routing tables in the routers often change whenever the possible routes change. Dynamic routing is more suitable as the nodes in WSNs may frequently change their position and die at any moment. The routing protocols are classified into single hop and multi hop routing. In a single hop routing, sensor node directly communicates with the sink to share the gathered information. Energy consumption is high in the network using single hop protocol. In multi hop routing, data is routed through the intermediate nodes to the base station. Each node transfers sensed data to the immediate node which in turn transfers the data to the next immediate node and finally the data reaches the base station. Energy consumption in this kind of routing protocol is less and thus the lifetime of the nodes is high. The major challenge to the efficient operation of wireless sensor network lies in its ability to deliver the sensed information from the nodes to the sink within the specific time duration without the loss of data packets with high security. The sensor nodes depend on the battery source for their operation which has limited capacity. Thus the energy resource of the sensor nodes has to be used efficiently in order to increase the operational lifetime of the network.

Book Description
Nowadays, Opportunistic Routing (OR) is widely considered to be the most important paradigm for Multi-hop wireless networks (MWNs). It exploits the broadcast nature of wireless medium to propagate information from one point to another within the network. In OR scheme, when a node has new information to share, it rst needs to set its forwarding list which include the IDs and/or any relevant information to its best suited neighboring nodes. This operation is supported by the use of appropriate metrics. Then, it executes a coordination algorithm allowing transmission reliability and high throughput among the next-hop forwarders. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive guide to understand the characteristics and challenges faced in the area of opportunistic routing protocols in MWNs. Moreover, since the planet we live on is largely covered by water, OR protocols have gained much attention during the last decade in real-time aquatic applications, such as oil/chemical spill monitoring, ocean resource management, anti-submarine missions and so on. One of the major problems in Underwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSNs) is determining an e cient and reliable routing methodology between the source node and the destination node. Therefore, designing e cient and robust routing protocols for UWSNs became an attractive topic for researchers. This paper seeks to address in detail the key factors of underwater sensor network. Furthermore, it calls into question 5 state-of-the-art routing protocols proposed for UWSN: The Depth-Based Routing protocol (DBR), the Energy-E cient Depth-Based Routing protocol (EEDBR), the Hydraulic-pressure-based anycast routing protocol (Hydrocast), the Geographic and opportunistic routing protocol with Depth Adjustment for mobile underwater sensor networks (GEDAR), and the Void- Aware Pressure Routing for underwater sensor networks (VAPR). Finally, it covers the performance of those protocol through the use of the R programming language.
