Improved Isotopic Measurement of Plutonium by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Improved Isotopic Measurement of Plutonium by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry PDF Author:

Book Description
Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is accepted widely as the benchmark method for precise and accurate isotopic determination of plutonium. TIMS is one of the few analytical methods capable of determining Pu in bioassay samples at the level required for detecting a 50 yr committed dose of 100 mRem resulting from an inhalation exposure to highly insoluble forms of Pu. Typically, Pu is measured in bioassay samples by radiochemical separation, electrodeposition onto a planchet, and radiometric determination by alpha spectrometry. If, based on the alpha spectrometry results, a sample is deemed to need a more sensitive analysis (i.e. suspected uptake, borderline alpha spectrometry positive for Pu uptake, etc.), then the sample is prepared for analysis by TIMS. Part of the development process for establishing a program to determine Pu in bioassay samples by TIMS at the Savannah River Site involved a careful evaluation of the Pu blank value in the reagents used for sample preparation and in urine blanks. This exercise allowed for the evaluation of the newly developed radiochemical separation procedure, the resin bead loading procedure, and the detection limits of the thermal ionization mass spectrometer.

Plutonium Bioassay by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry ICP

Plutonium Bioassay by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry ICP PDF Author:

Book Description
The determination of plutonium in urine poses several analytical challenges, e.g., detectability, matrix, etc. We have investigated the feasibility of analyzing plutonium in processed urine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). The urine samples are first spiked with [sup 244]Pu as a tracer and internal standard, then processed by co-precipitation and column chromatography using TRU-Spec[trademark], an extraction resin. By enhancing ICP/MS detection capabilities via improved sample introduction and data acquisition efficiencies, an instrumental detection limit of 5 to 50 fg (0.3 to 3 fCi for [sup 239]pu) is typically obtained, depending on the desired degree of quantitation. A brief summary of the analytical method as well as the basis for measuring radionuclides by ICP/MS are submitted; the separation procedure, methods of sample introduction, and data acquisition techniques are then highlighted.

Rapid Mass Spectrometry Method for Uranium and Plutonium

Rapid Mass Spectrometry Method for Uranium and Plutonium PDF Author:

Pages : 5

Book Description
A new, rapid sample preparation method to improve the assay of uranium and plutonium by mass spectrometry has been developed at the Westinghouse Savannah River Site (SRS). The method is applied to the analysis of mixed plutonium-uranium oxide materials but can be applied to low-level mass spectrometry analyses as well. The new method uses a single extraction chromatographic column to separate and purify both uranium and plutonium for isotopic assay by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. A dual uranium/plutonium spike isotope dilution technique is used to allow rapid analysis of uranium/plutonium content and isotopics. A single UTEVA Resin column is utilized to simultaneously separate both uranium and plutonium from the sample matrix. The plutonium and uranium can rapidly removed from the column separately or eluted together for analysis. This new method combines sample preparation into a single, effective separation step that significantly reduces sample preparation time and costs.
