New Concepts for Parallel Object-Relational Query Processing

New Concepts for Parallel Object-Relational Query Processing PDF Author: Michael Jaedicke
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540455078
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
During the last few years, parallel object-relational database management systems have emerged as the leading data management technology on the market. These systems are extensible by user-defined data types and user-defined functionality for the data. This work focuses on the efficient parallel execution of user-defined functionality. The main contributions describe techniques to support data parallelism for user-defined scalar and aggregate functions and intra-function parallelism for the execution of a scalar function on a large object, and a new technology to provide extensibility with regard to new set-oriented database operations that can efficiently implement user-defined functionality in parallel object-relational database management systems.

Euro-Par 2001 Parallel Processing

Euro-Par 2001 Parallel Processing PDF Author: Rizos Sakellariou
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540446818
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 993

Book Description
Euro-Par – the European Conference on Parallel Computing – is an international conference series dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms, and applications for parallel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the dev- opment of parallel computing both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontiers of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularlyimportant at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real ind- trial take up. The main audience for and participants in Euro-Par are seen as researchers in academic departments, government laboratories, and industrial organisations. Euro-Par aims to become the primarychoice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their speci?c areas. Euro-Par is also int- ested in applications that demonstrate the e?ectiveness of the main Euro-Par themes. Euro-Par has its own Internet domain with a permanent web site where the historyof the conference series is described: http://www. euro-par. org. The Euro-Par conference series is sponsored bythe Association of Computer Machineryand the International Federation of Information Processing. Euro-Par 2001 Euro-Par 2001 was organised bythe Universityof Manchester and UMIST.

Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Parallel Computation, ACPC'99, held in Salzburg, Austria in February 1999; the conference included special tracks on parallel numerics and on parallel computing in image processing, video processing, and multimedia. The volume presents 50 revised full papers selected from a total of 75 submissions. Also included are four invited papers and 15 posters. The papers are organized in topical sections on linear algebra, differential equations and interpolation, (Quasi-)Monte Carlo methods, numerical software, numerical applications, image segmentation and image understanding, motion estimation and block matching, video processing, wavelet techniques, satellite image processing, data structures, data partitioning, resource allocation and performance analysis, cluster computing, and simulation and applications.

Nearest Neighbor Search:

Nearest Neighbor Search: PDF Author: Apostolos N. Papadopoulos
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387275444
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
Modern applications are both data and computationally intensive and require the storage and manipulation of voluminous traditional (alphanumeric) and nontraditional data sets (images, text, geometric objects, time-series). Examples of such emerging application domains are: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Multimedia Information Systems, CAD/CAM, Time-Series Analysis, Medical Information Sstems, On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP), and Data Mining. These applications pose diverse requirements with respect to the information and the operations that need to be supported. From the database perspective, new techniques and tools therefore need to be developed towards increased processing efficiency. This monograph explores the way spatial database management systems aim at supporting queries that involve the space characteristics of the underlying data, and discusses query processing techniques for nearest neighbor queries. It provides both basic concepts and state-of-the-art results in spatial databases and parallel processing research, and studies numerous applications of nearest neighbor queries.

Processing Aggregates in Parallel Database Systems

Processing Aggregates in Parallel Database Systems PDF Author: University of Wisconsin--Madison. Computer Sciences Dept
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Parallel processing (Electronic computers)
Languages : en
Pages : 20

Book Description
Abstract: "Aggregates are rife in real life SQL queries. However, in the parallel query processing literature aggregate processing has received surprisingly little attention; furthermore, the way current parallel database systems do aggregate processing is far from optimal in many scenarios. We describe two hashing based algorithms for parallel evaluation of aggregates. A performance analysis via an analytical model and an implementation on the Intel Paragon multi-computer shows that each works well for some aggregation selectivities but poorly for the remaining. Fortunately, where one does poorly the other does well and vice-versa. Thus, the two together cover all possible selectivities. We show how, using sampling, an optimizer can decide which of the two algorithms to use for a particular query. Finally, we investigate the impact of data skew on the performance of these algorithms."

High-Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases

High-Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases PDF Author: David Taniar
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470391359
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 575

Book Description
The latest techniques and principles of parallel and grid database processing The growth in grid databases, coupled with the utility of parallel query processing, presents an important opportunity to understand and utilize high-performance parallel database processing within a major database management system (DBMS). This important new book provides readers with a fundamental understanding of parallelism in data-intensive applications, and demonstrates how to develop faster capabilities to support them. It presents a balanced treatment of the theoretical and practical aspects of high-performance databases to demonstrate how parallel query is executed in a DBMS, including concepts, algorithms, analytical models, and grid transactions. High-Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases serves as a valuable resource for researchers working in parallel databases and for practitioners interested in building a high-performance database. It is also a much-needed, self-contained textbook for database courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.
