Women Veterans are the largest growing population Veterans, yet have a significant mental health disparity, greater than both civilian women and Veteran men. This disparity continues in the mental health outpatient treatment options for women Veterans. Veteran Administration (VA) healthcare services may not be suited to their needs as women, and civilian services are not well suited to manage their needs as Veterans. Therefore, this dissertation study used constructivist Grounded Theory methods to explore the experiences of women Veterans when accessing mental health outpatient services, their decision-making process when make the choice to enter mental health service, and aspects of the experience that are important or meaningful to them. Twelve women Veterans revealed meaningful, personal stories on their experiences of trauma and their use of mental health outpatient services. While addressing each of these factors, what emerged from the data was a broader Grounded Theory Process model of how women Veterans process trauma, and the categories of Trauma, Transitions, Identity and Structure. Women Veterans who participated in the study used mental health outpatient services to assist in reestablishing identity after trauma and to propel forward in their lives. This research provides key insight into how women Veterans make healthcare related choices and process traumatic events, like military sexual trauma (MST). This has implications for research, practice, and policy to improve the provision of care for women Veterans.

Objective : Assess pt perceptions of quality and access to gynecological care through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) versus outside the VHA. Design : Anonymous cross sectional surveys distributed to VHA patients presenting for gynecological care and collected after visits. Patients : A sample of 356 female Veterans presenting for care the Mission Valley VA Women's Clinic between Nov 16, 2010 and April 10, 2013. Measures : Patients rated the quality and access of current care and over a 12 month period, both within and outside the VHA system. Analysis : The answers to questions regarding quality and access to care at the VA were summarized. Answers to questions comparing the VA versus outside care was dichotomized (better at the VA versus the same or worse) and was analyzed with respect to age (18-39 versus >̲40) and race (White, Black, Asian, Hispanic and other). Results : Gynecological care through the VA was rated as better than outside care by 70% and easier to access by 62%. There was no statistical significant difference reported with respect to age or race.

Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Women who fight in wars also have to fight for their right to do so. But what are the obstacles impeding their progress in achieving equal status as both active service members and as veterans? This book, written by a team of female veterans and military scholars, demonstrates the ways in which women service members and veterans experience a unique set of challenges when attempting to both honorably serve their country and reintegrate into civilian society following military service.
