Contexte : Si la ménopause est un phénomène physiologique, elle est également un phénomène social. A savoir qu'elle nourrit des représentations collectives et produit un discours social. Ainsi, il s'opère une articulation entre ces deux dimensions. Avec l'allongement de l'espérance de vie, les femmes vont passer un tiers de leur vie ménopausée. Objectif : L'objectif de ce travail est d'appréhender les représentations et de comprendre le vécu de la ménopause afin d'améliorer le suivi par le médecin traitant, le dépistage ainsi que la qualité de vie des femmes à cette période de leur vie. Méthode : Nous avons mené une étude qualitative à l'aide d'entretiens semi-dirigés. En fondant notre recherche sur une complémentarité entre une approche phénoménologique, le modèle du noyau central de J.C. Abric et les modèles étiologiques de F. Laplantine. Le tout comparé à la théorie de D. Delanoë. Résultats : Nous avons réalisé 12 entretiens semi-directifs, entre janvier 2017 et mai 2017. Les femmes interrogées étaient âgées de 49 à 59 ans. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence une représentation de la ménopause avec pour noyau central : l'arrêt des règles, les bouffées de chaleur, l'arrêt de la fécondité. La zone muette est composée des sentiments de deuil ou de liberté face à l'arrêt de la fécondité. Quant à la zone périphérique, elle est définie par la modification du statut social, celle du capital santé et celle de l'apparence physique. Ces représentations vont d'un pôle positif à un pôle négatif. Elles sont susceptibles de varier au cours du temps pour une même femme. Les femmes ménopausées ne sont plus demandeuses d'une médicalisation de ce moment de leur vie, elles ont moins recours à un suivi gynécologique durant cette période de leur vie et espacent la périodicité de leur consultation avec un examen clinique oublié. Le seul examen de dépistage régulièrement réalisé est la mammographie grâce au dépistage obligatoire. Conclusion : La connaissance des représentations et du vécu de la ménopause chez les femmes ménopausées, permettrait au médecin traitant de répondre à leurs attentes en créant un temps de consultation dédié à l'éducation et à la prévention en instaurant une relation médecin-patiente équilibrée et une prise en charge efficiente.

Margaret Lock explicitly compares Japanese and North American medical and political accounts of female middle age to challenge Western assumptions about menopause. She uses ethnography, interviews, statistics, historical and popular culture materials, and medical publications to produce a richly detailed account of Japanese women's lives.
