The British: People from worldwide origins

The British: People from worldwide origins PDF Author: Birgit Lonnemann
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3640200829
Category : Foreign Language Study

Pages : 25

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Osnabrück (Fachbereich Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaften), course: Constructing Britishness: Fiction, Film, Press, language: English, abstract: “We call our islands by no less than six different names, England, Britain, Great Britain, the British Isles, the United Kingdom and, in very exalted moments, Albion.” This quotation taken from George Orwell’s essay England, Your England (1941) clearly shows that the names quoted above are often used as synonyms, although they patently are not. So it is no surprise that some people define themselves as being “Englishsorrybritish” – a term which occurred in the newspapers several times over the last few months. A lot of people seem to be quite confused about their identity, about who they are and where they belong. But using the words “English” and “British” interchangeably is, in my opinion, not very fair – especially with regard to the inhabitants of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In fact, the so-called United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises four different indigenous nations: English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish. And considering the fact that the British Isles (cf. map 1, page 2) – of which the United Kingdom3 is a part – have attracted settlers and immigrants for several centuries, it is not surprising that the contemporary British are a very diverse people, or – as is stated in the title of my paper – people from worldwide origins. The question arises whether the majority of people in the United Kingdom consider themselves to be British or rather to be English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or part of any other community often referred to as a so-called ethnic minority group.

Bloody Nasty People

Bloody Nasty People PDF Author: Daniel Trilling
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1844679608
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
The past decade in the UK saw the rise of the British National Party, the country’s most successful ever far-right political movement, and the emergence of the anti-Islamic English Defence League. Taking aim at asylum seekers, Muslims, ‘enforced multiculturalism’ and benefit ‘scroungers’, these groups have been working overtime to shift the blame for the nation’s ills onto the shoulders of the vulnerable. What does this extremist resurgence say about the state of modern Britain? Drawing on archival research and extensive interviews with key figures, such as BNP leader Nick Griffin, Daniel Trilling shows how previously marginal characters from a tiny neo-Nazi subculture successfully exploited tensions exacerbated by the fear of immigration, the War on Terror and steepening economic inequality. Mainstream politicians have consistently underestimated the far right in Britain while pursuing policies that give it the space to grow. Bloody Nasty People calls time on this complacency in an account that provides us with fresh insights into the dynamics of political extremism.

Staying Power

Staying Power PDF Author: Peter Fryer
Publisher: Pluto Press (UK)
ISBN: 9780745338309
Category : Black people
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Staying Power is a panoramic history of black Britons. First published in 1984 amid race riots and police brutality, Fryer's history performed a deeply political act, revealing how Africans, Asians, and their descendants had been erased from British history. Stretching back to the Roman conquest, encompassing the court of Henry VIII, and following a host of characters from the pioneering nurse and war hero Mary Seacole to the abolitionist Olaudah Equiano, Peter Fryer paints a picture of two thousand years of black presence in Britain. By rewriting black Britons into British history, showing where they influenced political traditions, social institutions, and cultural life, Staying Power presented a radical challenge to racist and nationalist agendas. This edition includes a new foreword by Gary Younge examining the book's continued significance in shaping black British identity today, alongside the now-classic introduction by Paul Gilroy.
