The Transformation of Biblical Proper Names

The Transformation of Biblical Proper Names PDF Author: Joze Krasovec
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567452247
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
In the transmission we encounter various transformations of biblical proper names. The basic phonetic relationship between Semitic languages on the one hand and non-Semitic languages, like Greek and Latin, on the other hand, is so complex that it was hardly possible to establish a unified tradition in writing biblical proper names within the Greek and Latin cultures. Since the Greek and Latin alphabets are inadequate for transliteration of Semitic languages, authors of Greek and Latin Bibles were utter grammatical and cultural innovators. In Greek and Latin Bibles we note an almost embarrassing number of phonetic variants of proper names. A survey of ancient Greek and Latin Bible translations allows one to trace the boundary between the phonetic transliterations that are justified within Semitic, Greek, and Latin linguistic rules, and those forms that transgress linguistic rules. The forms of biblical proper names are much more stable and consistent in the Hebrew Bible than in Greek, Latin and other ancient Bible translations. The inexhaustible wealth of variant pronunciations of the same proper names in Greek and Latin translations indicate that Greek and Latin translators and copyists were in general not fluent in Hebrew and did therefore not have sufficient support in a living Hebrew phonetic context. This state affects personal names of rare use to a far greater extent than the geographical names, whose forms are expressed in the oral tradition by a larger circle of the population.

Tribes of Yahweh

Tribes of Yahweh PDF Author: Norman Gottwald
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567549577
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 967

Book Description
A twentieth-anniversary reprint of the landmark book that launched the current explosion of social-scientific studies in the biblical field. It sets forth a cultural-material methodology for reconstructing the origins of ancient Israel and offers the hypothesis that Israel emerged as an indigenous social revolutionary peasant movement. In a new preface, written for this edition, Gottwald takes account of the 'sea change' in biblical studies since 1979 as he reviews the impact of his work on church and academy, assesses its merits and limitations, indicates his present thinking on the subject, and points toward future directions in the social-critical study of ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible.

The Origin Myths and Holy Places in the Old Testament

The Origin Myths and Holy Places in the Old Testament PDF Author: Lukasz Niesiolowski-Spano
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134938373
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
'Origin Myths and Holy Places in the Old Testament' examines the biblical narratives which describe the origins of holy places. It argues for the Hellenistic origin or redaction of most of these narratives. Three central questions are addressed: are there common features in biblical accounts about the foundation of places of worship; are there elements in the aetiological stories that reveal the 'real' mythology/rituals of the sanctuary; what were the circumstances of the creation of such narratives?

Design-Based Research in Education

Applications are presented for curriculum development, intervention, assessment, and digital contexts, as well as teaching second-language learners. Also addressed is DBR’s role in educator preparation, professional development, dissertation research, and technical education.

Before There Were Kings

Before There Were Kings PDF Author: Elie Assis
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 164602253X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Following the great periods of national leadership by Moses and Joshua, the book of Judges depicts the stewardship of various judges that rose to power to solve local religious and military challenges in the premonarchic period. This volume provides a close reading of the entire book of Judges, taking seriously the distinct elements of the book and how they are interconnected. Elie Assis explores the ways in which the ideology and theology of Judges unfold through a careful literary analysis. Moving beyond the cycle of sin, punishment, and salvation, Assis demonstrates how differences in the descriptive language applied to each judge, as well as the evaluations in the opening and concluding chapters, provide clues as to the organization and message of the text. Most works on Judges focus on the historical background of the period or the historical process of the book’s composition and seek to dissolve its stories into component parts. In contrast, Before There Were Kings points to the deep underlying unity of Judges and the function of the individual stories within the whole. New and carefully drawn insights related to the purpose of each section and the themes that shape the book as a whole make this a groundbreaking, programmatic contribution to research on the book of Judges. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of the Old Testament and the Hebrew Bible.

The Original Torah

The Original Torah PDF Author: S. David Sperling
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814780946
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
Citing the lack of archeological evidence supporting the historicity of any of the Old Testament's narratives, Sperling (Bible, Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion) argues instead that the stories of the Jewish Bible are in fact political allegories dating from the Davidic era. For example, while there is no support for the stories of Jewish slavery in and exodus from Egypt, Sperling argues that these tales are a metaphor for Israelites' withdrawal from the system of Egyptian political and economic rule. Jewish Theology Unbound

Jewish Theology Unbound PDF Author: James A. Diamond
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192528254
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
Jewish Theology Unbound challenges the widespread misinterpretation of Judaism as a religion of law as opposed to theology. James A. Diamond provides close readings of the Bible, classical rabbinic texts, Jewish philosophers, and mystics from the ancient, medieval, and modern period, which communicate a profound Jewish philosophical theology on human nature, God, and the relationship between the two. The study begins with an examination of questioning in the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating that what the Bible encourages is independent philosophical inquiry into how to situate oneself in the world ethically, spiritually, and teleologically. It explores such themes as the nature of God through the various names by which God is known in the Jewish intellectual tradition, love of others and of God, death, martyrdom, freedom, angels, the philosophical quest, the Holocaust, and the state of Israel, all in light of the Hebrew Bible and the way it is filtered through the rabbinic, philosophical, and mystical traditions.
