Book Description
Excerpt from The Hunter and the Horns He saw it, milk-white, radiant, inexpressibly lovely. It stood motionless on the gravel desert, one forehoof slightly advanced, slightly lifted, the head with the wonderful tall tapered horns alert and turned towards the car, which must have appeared as a mere dot to its sight. The Naturalist

Book Description
Excerpt from The Naturalist: The Growth of the Horns of the Red Deer Various accounts have been written respecting the red deer; but as controversies on the subject of the growth of the horns arise from time to time, I am induced to present the following observations, although they will be found to vary very materially from what has been written by others who are considered good authorities. The best description, and nearest the truth which I have yet met with, is in the eighth volume of the Penny Cyclopaedia, published by Charles Knight Co., in the year 1838. This however is not exactly correct, for, in the first place, it states that the horns of a male red deer do not appear till his second year, whereas they do appear in his first year as a knob, or single straight horn, varying in length from one to nine inches, but are not shed until he is twenty months old. Buck Fever

Buck Fever PDF Author: Mike Sajna
Publisher: University of Pittsburgh Press
ISBN: 0822954362
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
Every fall close to one million hunters enter Pennsylvania's forests and mountains in quest of the white-tailed deer. Some are seeking sport and companionship; others are stocking their larders for winter; many are conservationists who regard hunting as the most humane way of reducing overpopulated deer herds. They all face the increasing activism of animal rights advocates who are opposed to hunting in principle and who frequently picket and harass hunters. This controversial subject is explored in depth by Mike Sajna, the outdoors columnist for Pittsburgh Magazine and a twenty-year veteran of Pennsylvania's "pumpkin army," the orange-clad throng that invades the woods every season. To explain the ethos and traditions of hunting he takes the reader to a typical deer camp in Warren County, in the rugged terrain of the Allegheny High Plateau. Starting with the trek north from their homes around Pittsburgh, he captures the sights and sounds, thoughts and feelings of three generations of hunters. With humor, affection, and insight he recounts the hunting lore, the camaraderie, the physical testing that make deer camp a unique experience.
