Book Description
Pattern Recognition by Humans and Machines, Volume 2: Visual Perception provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of research on perception. This book focuses on several fundamental problems of pattern recognition in speech perception and visual form perception. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of some of the basic theoretical questions in speech perception. This text then explores the spatiotemporal orchestration of visuosensory attentional and oculomotor processes involved in active visual exploration. Other chapters consider several basic questions concerning visual form perception, including the perception of patterns and features. This book discusses as well the role of eye movements in pattern processing and models of segmentation and pattern recognition. The final chapter describes the distinctions made in perceptual processing between model-driven and data-driven processing. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists in general and specialists in the field of perception. Computer and cognitive scientists will also find this book useful.

Methodologies of Pattern Recognition

Methodologies of Pattern Recognition PDF Author: Satosi Watanabe
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483268985
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 591

Book Description
Methodologies of Pattern Recognition is a collection of papers that deals with the two approaches to pattern recognition (geometrical and structural), the Robbins-Monro procedures, and the implications of interactive graphic computers for pattern recognition methodology. Some papers describe non-supervised learning in statistical pattern recognition, parallel computation in pattern recognition, and statistical analysis as a tool to make patterns emerge from data. One paper points out the importance of cluster processing in visual perception in which proximate points of similar brightness values form clusters. At higher levels of mental activity humans are efficient in clumping complex items into clusters. Another paper suggests a recognition method which combines versatility and an efficient noise-proofness in dealing with the two main problems in the field of recognition. These difficulties are the presence of a large variety of observed signals and the presence of interference. One paper reports on a possible feature selection for pattern recognition systems employing the minimization of population entropy. Electronic engineers, physicists, physiologists, psychologists, logicians, mathematicians, and philosophers will find great rewards in reading the above collection.

Quality Recognition & Prediction

Quality Recognition & Prediction PDF Author: Shoichi Teshima
Publisher: Momentum Press
ISBN: 1606503448
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The Mahalanobis-Taguchi data handling and pattern recognition system is widely established-- built and extended from the original quality control precepts of Genichi Taguchi. But the MT system is not always well understood. This new book makes the system much more vivid and concrete with real-life applications in a wide variety of disciplines from industry to general commerce. The book offers a clear computational method to show the user how to actually apply the system to real manufacturing control problems. With the renowned international industry background of the three authors and their historic ties to Genichi Taguchi, this book will bring a unique insight into how to get the most benefits from the MT System. The book offers an overview of pattern recognition issues and the precepts of the MT system. explains the merits of the MT System and its computational methods. shows how to handle data with the MT System and extract useful information. provides a useful comparison of the advantages and disadvantages between traditional Artificial Intelligence systems and the MT system. provides case study examples of MT Systems applications.

Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition PDF Author: Bruce G. Batchelor
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146134154X
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 486

Book Description
Pattern recognition is a child of modern technology; electronics and computers in particular have inspired research and made it possible to develop the subject in a way which would have been impossible otherwise. It is a rapidly growing research field which began to flourish in the 1960s and which is beginning to produce commercial devices. Significant developments have been made, both in the theory and practical engineering of the subject, but there is evidence of a schism developing between these two approaches. Practical machines have usually been designed on an ad hoc basis, with little use being made of advanced theory. It is difficult to provide a rigorous mathematical treatment of many problems pertinent to a practical situation. This is due, in part at least, to a conceptual rift between theory and practice. The mathematics of optimal systems is well developed, whereas pragmatists are more concerned with vaguer ideas of reasonable and sufficient. In some situations, the quest for optimality can constrain research and retard practical progress. This can occur, for example, if too narrow a view is taken of "optimal": the accuracy of a system may be optimal whereas its speed, cost, or physical size may be grossly suboptimal. The objective of this book is to present a glimpse of the pragmatic approach to pattern recognition; there already exist a number of excellent texts describing theoretical developments.

How to Create a Mind

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bold futurist and renowned author of The Singularity Is Near explores the limitless potential of reverse-engineering the human brain. “This book is a Rosetta Stone for the mystery of human thought.”—Martine Rothblatt, chairman and CEO, United Therapeutics, and creator of Sirius XM Satellite Radio “Kurzweil’s vision of our super-enhanced future is completely sane and calmly reasoned, and his book should nicely smooth the path for the earth’s robot overlords, who, it turns out, will be us.”—The New York Times In How to Create a Mind, Ray Kurzweil presents a provocative exploration of the most important project in human-machine civilization: reverse-engineering the brain to understand precisely how it works and using that knowledge to create even more intelligent machines. Kurzweil discusses how the brain functions, how the mind emerges, brain-computer interfaces, and the implications of vastly increasing the powers of our intelligence to address the world’s problems. He also thoughtfully examines emotional and moral intelligence and the origins of consciousness and envisions the radical possibilities of our merging with the intelligent technology we are creating.
