Book Description
A fundamental ideal of our democratic republic is that every person has some way through which she/he can participate in decisions which directly affect her/him. To some extent, most teachers are able to recognize this ideal in their private lives. It seems logical that this realization would also carry over and prevail in an individual's working life. This would also include the teaching profession and school administration. With few exceptions, teachers seemed to favor participation in decision-making (Yarborough, 1976). The extent of teacher involvement in decision-making and representation together were strongly related to the effectiveness of the units (Berlinger, 1975). Nowadays, the school effectiveness research has become one of the most dynamic areas of study in education. Schools are complex social systems in which different elements or characteristics combine in different ways and different combinations in various schools (Miller, 1994). The government will increase the number of comprehensive high schools in Taiwan, when the number of comprehensive high school increases, it is essential to understand whether there is a relationship between teachers' participative decision-making and school effectiveness. Second International Handbook of Educational Leadership and Administration

Second International Handbook of Educational Leadership and Administration PDF Author: Kenneth A. Leithwood
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401003750
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 1227

Book Description
The first International Handbook of Educational Leadership and Administration (Leithwood et al.) was published in 1996 and quickly became something of a best seller for reference works within education. Such success, we suggest, was at least partly due to the unprecedented global waves of concern for improving schools launched in the mid 1980's, combined with a widespread belief in leadership as the single most powerful contribution to such improvement. The roots of this belief can be found in evidence produced by the early "effective schools" research, although there is a "romance" with leadership! as an explanation for success in many non-school enterprises, as well. During the two-year period during which this current handbook was being written, activity in the realms of school leadership, school improvement, and leadership development gained further momentum. The English government created its new National College of School Leadership, and several Asian nations announced new initiatives in leadership selection, preparation, and development.

Evaluation in Decision Making

Evaluation in Decision Making PDF Author: Naftaly S. Glasman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400926693
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
This book is about the practice of decision making by school principals and about ways to improve this practice by capitalizing on evaluation dimensions. Much has been written on decision making but surprisingly little on decision making in the school principalship. Much has been also written on evaluation as well as on evaluation and decision making, but not much has been written on evaluation in decision making, especially decision making in the principalship. This book presents two messages. One is that decision making in the principalship can be studied and improved and not only talked about in abstract terms. The other message is that evaluation can contribute to the understanding of decision making in the principalship and to the improvement of its practice. In this book we call for the conception of an evaluation-minded principal, a principal who has a wide perspective on the nature of evaluation and its potential benefits, a principal who is also inclined to use evaluation perceptions and techniques as part of his/her decision-making process. This book was conceived in 1985 with the idea to combine thoughts about educational administration with thoughts about educational evaluation. Studies of decision making in the principalship had already been on their way. We decided to await the findings, and in the meantime we wrote a first conceptual version of evaluation in decision making. As the studies were completed we wrote a first empirical version of same.
