Se retrouver dans un pays dont on ignore le système écrit nous révèle le degré d'importance de l'accès à l'information écrite dans notre quotidien. Les performances de lecture à voix haute peuvent être perturbées suite à des lésions cérébrales. Lorsque les performances en lecture sont atteintes, on parle de troubles acquis de la lecture. Pour appréhender au mieux ces troubles en français écrit, l'orthophoniste doit disposer de moyens suffisamment précis et adaptés pour évaluer leurs conséquences et proposer un projet thérapeutique adéquat. Par sa complexité, la lecture intéresse trois domaines d'études: la linguistique, qui définit les unités du système écrit, la psycholinguistique, qui étudie l'influence de ces unités et d'autres caractéristiques inhérentes au mot écrit (fréquence lexicale, concrétude, longueur, classe, structure morphologique) sur les performances de lecture, et la neuropsychologie qui analyse les processus impliqués et voies de lecture en jeu. S'appuyant sur les connaissances théoriques acquises dans ces trois domaines, ce mémoire a pour objectif la présentation du protocole d'évaluation des troubles acquis de la lecture en tant que test précis, valide et sensible. Le contenu des douze épreuves est détaillé et justifié, démontrant la pertinence et l'aspect complet du test. La validité de ce protocole est décrite au moyen de passations auprès de sujets normo-Iecteurs. Les performances de lecture observées (temps de réponse et scores) varient en fonction de l'âge et du niveau scolaire. Les passations du test auprès de patients soulignent le caractère valide, sensible, adaptable et aisément utilisable de l'E.T.A.L (Evaluation des Troubles Acquis de la Lecture).
