The Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1789-1800

The Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1789-1800 PDF Author: Maeva Marcus
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 9780231088732
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 692

Book Description
Volume 6 covers the beginnings of federal admiralty and equity jurisprudence, habeas corpus, judicial review, forreign affairs, and the relationship between the national judiciary and state courts. Also included is an appendix of documents pertaining to the question of whether the Supreme Court could issue advisory opinions at the request of the executive branch. A narrative history introduces each case, and the documents are arranged chronologically thereafter. The texts of many of them had to be reconstructed from originals that were severely damaged or written in shorthand. Taken from official court records, as well as related correspondence, lawyers' notes, justices' notes and opinions, newspaper commentary, and pamphlets, these documents provide critical material with which to assess the initial development of federal court practice and procedure.

Pagans and Philosophers

Pagans and Philosophers PDF Author: John Marenbon
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691176086
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
An ambitious history of how medieval writers came to terms with paganism From the turn of the fifth century to the beginning of the eighteenth, Christian writers were fascinated and troubled by the "Problem of Paganism," which this book identifies and examines for the first time. How could the wisdom and virtue of the great thinkers of antiquity be reconciled with the fact that they were pagans and, many thought, damned? Related questions were raised by encounters with contemporary pagans in northern Europe, Mongolia, and, later, America and China. Pagans and Philosophers explores how writers—philosophers and theologians, but also poets such as Dante, Chaucer, and Langland, and travelers such as Las Casas and Ricci—tackled the Problem of Paganism. Augustine and Boethius set its terms, while Peter Abelard and John of Salisbury were important early advocates of pagan wisdom and virtue. University theologians such as Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, and Bradwardine, and later thinkers such as Ficino, Valla, More, Bayle, and Leibniz, explored the difficulty in depth. Meanwhile, Albert the Great inspired Boethius of Dacia and others to create a relativist conception of scientific knowledge that allowed Christian teachers to remain faithful Aristotelians. At the same time, early anthropologists such as John of Piano Carpini, John Mandeville, and Montaigne developed other sorts of relativism in response to the issue. A sweeping and original account of an important but neglected chapter in Western intellectual history, Pagans and Philosophers provides a new perspective on nothing less than the entire period between the classical and the modern world.

Ancient Apologetic Exegesis

Ancient Apologetic Exegesis PDF Author: Stuart Parsons
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 162564809X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
New Testament scholarship uncovers much about first-century Christianity. Early Christian masters such as Origen and Augustine draw great attention to the third and following centuries. Yet oddly, despite this flood of attention to both the first century and to the third and later centuries, the second century often escapes notice, this despite its almost living memory of Jesus and his apostles from only a generation or two prior. A distinctive biblical exegesis was used by those second-century apologists who challenged Greco-Roman pagan religionists. Along with introducing the general shape of this ancient apologetic exegesis, Ancient Apologetic Exegesis aims at its recovery as well. Current literature often misunderstands or dismisses second-century exegetical approaches. But by looking behind anachronistic views of ancient genre, literacy, and rhetoric, we can rediscover a forgotten form of early Christian exegesis.

Pages : 224

Book Description
Who and what was pagan depended on the outlook of the observer, as Christopher Jones shows in this fresh and penetrating analysis. Treating paganism as a historical construct rather than a fixed entity, Between Christian and Pagan uncovers the fluid ideas, rituals, and beliefs that Christians and pagans shared in Late Antiquity.

New Religions and the Mediation of Non-Monogamy

New Religions and the Mediation of Non-Monogamy PDF Author: Michelle Mueller
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429588739
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
New Religions and the Mediation of Non-Monogamy examines the relationship between alternative American religions and the media representation of non-monogamies on reality-TV shows like Sister Wives, Seeking Sister Wife, and Polyamory: Married & Dating. The book is the first full-length study informed by fieldwork with Mormon polygamists and fieldwork with LGBTQ Neo-Pagan/Neo-Tantric polyamorists. The book tracks community members’ responses to the new media about them, their engagement with television and other media, and the likeness of representations to actual populations through fieldwork and interviews. The book highlights differences in socioeconomic privileges that shape Mormon polygamists’ lives and LGBTQ polyamorists’ lives, respectively. The polyamory movement receives support from liberal media. As reality TV has shifted the image of Mormon polygamy to one of liberal American middle-class culture, Mormon polygamists have gained in public favor. The media landscape of non-monogamy is mediated by, in addition to these alternative religious populations, the norms and practices of the reality-TV industry and by sociocultural and economic realities, including race and class. This book adds to the fields of media studies, critical race and gender studies, new religious movements, and queer studies.
